Fabia to Octavia upgrade

Featured Replies

I´m thinking of changing myFabia 5 door hatch 2001 TDI 100 Elegance for an Octavia 2 Estate. Mainly for expanding family reasons, are there any models to steer clear of. I would probably go for petrol this time and have it gassed (do skoda offer a bi fuel option).

One thing which does worry me is the number of posts on the fabia and octavia for squeeks, leaks, wind noise and so on. My 2001 car has been trouble free from the time I bought it at 20,000 miles its now at 60.000. Has build quality gone down?

any thoughts????

Many Thanks

Grant Bennett:) :)

Can't comment abou the estate but my 1.9tdi has no wind noise, no squeeks and has a tiny leak from nearside front door sill when it is very wet. Will get this looked at soon along with teh only other problem in the first 10K - door miiror indicator glass has discoloured, maybe it's not properly sealed and has got dirt in it, but will get fixed under warranty anyway.

DSG gearbox is fantastic but I think you only get triptronic on the petrols.

Only minor gripe is a liitle to much road noise from the Bridgestone tyres.

excellent, i like that quote.

get ready for a flaming :D

I
The 1.9 TDI is a much better all rounder than the 1.6 FSI petrol and I hear the 1.6 FSI is a bit noisy for a petrol engine and prefers super unleaded too. The 2.0 FSI is probably beyond your requirements and pretty thirsty too. In short go for the 1.9TDI. Better still go for DSG too.

For sheer grunt in my opinion you'll not do better than the 2.0TDI this side of the new vRS.

:iagree:

I haven't heard a good word said about the 1.6FSI, but get a TDi unit and you can't go far wrong.

As for upgrade, pah.

I upgraded from a Fabia VRS to an Octy 2 Elegeance TDi estate at the beginning of March this year due to necessity of space (father becoming increasingly disabled). I had trouble free motoring from my Fabia (I had it from new for 18 mths) and absolutely loved it. However (touch wood) so far so good with the Octy, the extra space has made life so much easier and being the elegance version it has a very good spec (I just love the rear parking sensors) and I enjoy those little extras that I didn't have on the Fabia VRS. Did lots of research into which engine to have, went for the 1.9 TDi as the most economical (I'm also a fan of the PD engine), and have certainly found that it has enough power for me. I travel on mostly A roads and a few B roads, so far I am getting an average of 53 mpg (I have done 2200 miles already) which I am pretty pleased about for a brand new car. All in all I'm really enjoying the practicality of my change and at present would recommend this car to anyone.

If you go for petrol + bi-fuel conversion I'd skip the 1.6, it will be working a little too hard IMHO. Bigger petrol or the 1.9 PD or 2.0 PD makes a lot more sense. With the PDs you won't need the fuel conversion of course.

Tons more room inside and should be quite a nice cruiser. ICE has improved a LOT since the Mk1 and probably doesn't need replacing unless you are 'into it'.

Nice choice :)

I switched from a 51 plate 19sdi fabia to a 55 plate octy 4x4 and cant fault it, loads of room(as you would expect), better gadgets and generally a much nicer looking car all round. Used to get around 60mpg from the fabia but still managing around the 50 mark with the 4x4 which is well good IMO

I wouldn't mate the 1.9TDi with DSG as i felt it sapped quite a bit of power, however the 2.0 TDi was a stormer with the DSG.

Real shame about lacking the paddles on the steering wheel, but the 2.0TDi did have the drop the gear stick to the side and change tiptronic setup. That was in sport trim though.

I have 1.9TDi with DSG, have covered nearly 10K miles in 6 month, mostly on country roads and find very little to fault - if you want to be really picky it does seem to drop a gear a little to quickly on gradients, but I just knock it into "manual" and chose teh right gear for me in these situations.

Oh and the car has so far returned 52mpg has opposed to 53.5 my old manual MK1 octy 110bhp. Pretty good I reckon.

Cool Glad you're liking the Octy II, I was looking at one and hence the test drives.

Waiting on some of reasoning behind the incident on here regarding warrenty though to decide if i will spend my cash with skoda or elsewhere. Saying that I'm also curious to see if skoda will release a 170BHP TDI in the VRs or if i would be looking at a leon or focus.

I get closer to 60MPG out of my 110, what sort of driving do you do?

Daily commute is 17 mls on country roads and through a couple of towns. Other work milage is mainly country roads and visiting farms. As I said the DSG gets slightly less milage on thse journeys, but on more open roads or motorways it is an improvement on the old 110.

I expected to take a drop when I when for teh DSG but am delighted that the reduction is so small...........and I can walk at the end of a journey!!!

Got an octy 1.9 ambiente on loan whilst the fabia is being sorted. first impression very very nice and seems very economical for such a big lump!

In time i might get one ie if kids/dogs appear!

Two things i would spec though - parking sensors and leather steering wheel - the plastic one feels crap after the leather on the fabia

very economical for such a big lump!

fabia vRS 1.9TDi = 1315Kg

octavia ambiente 1.9TDi = 1430Kg mk1 1515Kg mk2

not that much different for either car really ;)

big heavy lump
