DPF Regeneration

Featured Replies

So have had issues with the DPF for a little while now since having a new turbo & throttle body fitted. The independant who did the work were pretty good and they did ring me when they had the car for the work to say they were having problems clearing the fault and sorting it out. They fitted one of the sensors (Lamda, but need to check the invoice) did a forced regen and then used it as a 'home' vehicle for a couple of days to make sure it was working ok, (I know the guy who owns the garage). Picked the car up but after a couple of days starting smoking again and DPF & EML lights came on as well as the flashing Glow Plug light. Took it back to the garage and they checked it out and found the soot level was way up again! Did another forced regen and everything was fine for a couple of days again when the issue came back. Since then I purchased VCDS and been running my own scans etc. Could not get it to kick in on a system regen stationary so bought some Wurth DPF cleaner and ran that through. Managed to get it to kick in on a system regen and watching the soot levels they started to reduce from a high of 63g on the original scan to around 30g pretty quickly but then it slowed down and aborted the regen. I started the regen again and it gradually came down to 21.8g log is below then it started to rise again and went up to around 37g so I manually aborted it and tried to see if anything else was showing. Now, apart from the DPF fault it is showing P0403 EGR Fault which up to now I have had no issues with! Log also attached.

Think I am looking at a major DPF issue but not sure about the EGR? Any suggestions welcome.

At a guess, the EGR is blocked or broken and causing the regeneration issues. It certinaly is causing a engine warning light.

When the turbo failed, did it throw oil down the exhaust at the DPF? If so, I assume it was cleaned etc.

It looks like you've had the emissions fix done but if the mileage is correct, you're way over the mileage limit of the trust building meaures so Skoda aren't going to help towards any repair cost. 😞

Thanks for the input, will try and run a check on the EGR but up until yesterday the EGR never showed up as an issue.

The garage cleaned all the necessary parts on rebuilding. Like I said all was well for a couple of days each time after the regen so definitely think I am looking at the DPF being the culprit? Might look to get it taken off and sent away for a cleaning job

Obviously you should repair the EGR first, see what happens.

At a guess, If oil went into the DPF from a turbo failure I can imagine the ash generated being quite significant so its more than likely caused it to fail but that doesn't mean you shouldn't get somebody who knows how the system works to check the sensor is reading something plausible and repeatable and that all the pipes are still connected ok rather than just jumping into replacing it.

UPDATE: UPDATE : UPDATE

So, tweaked about a bit, little bit of EGR Cleaner and cleared off all fault codes. Started the engine a number of times, ran for a while and currently no fault codes appearing! The only 'error' showing at the moment is the DPF Filter warning light on the dash is illuminated but no flashing glow plug light and no EML. So decided to try (yet another) service regeneration. Set it up, kicked in, revs went up and glow plug light flashing. However as you will see by the 2 snapshots of the log, the soot content is increasing not deceasing as you would expect if the regeneration was working? The one point I have taken note of this time is that I also pulled up the coolant temperature which is shown at 79c. The temp gauge on the dash is showing slightly more than 90c and although I understand this is only a guide in case of overheating I am wondering if the ECU is taking that the engine temp is not high enough to actually carry out a full service regeneration?

Also do the temp readings in one of the scans mean anything?

Doesnt the oil temp need to be above 90°c?

You really need to be driving it under load and not keep starting the engine and leaving it ticking over, I was doing that during the rebuild of my Yeti and it tried a regen a couple of times (revs rose, fans cut in) but it did more harm than good & the DPF light came one, first proper drive burnt through the crud build up.

I have not driven mine since the lock down and wont drive it again until I am allowed to go far enough, I will not start the engine & charge the battery manually when needed, in my albeit short experience there is only one thing worse for an EU5 diesel than short local journeys and thats trying to regen at a standstill or on a short journey.

Hi, I have posted on this issue before, I took it out for a long run the other day, over 100 miles keeping the revs up between 2000 / 2500 rpm on dual carriageway and motorway

This is the 'best' soot reading I have been able to achieve

Those soot measurements are far too high as a lowest value, those figures should be the start of a regen rather than the end.

Have you checked the oil ash volume? It feels like the DPF could be clogged or one of the sensors isn't working properly.

For  reference, I have the same engine although it doesn't have the emissions fix applied like yours. After a regen the calculated soot dropped to 6g and the measured dropped to 0g. You can see an example regeneration that I graphed here:

Thanks Langers 2K, haven't checked oil ash volume, not that into VCDS as I only purchased it a couple of weeks ago, so still getting to grips with it. I watched a You Tube video by a guy called the Humble Mechanic about a "full diagnostic check" which logged everything? Did that to see if I could find any values for the sensors and thought it would give a log with readings on the sensors etc which I could try and compare with others. What I got was a whole bunch of PLA, PLB files, blockmap and adpmap which tbh mean not a lot to me but there we go. I did get an 'exhaust temp' readings when I was checking from the 3 sensors, before turbo. after turbo and one other and thought I had saved the log but cannot find it or the readings again! Can I check the oil ash value with VCDS? I know the garage replaced 2 of the sensors when the new turbo was fitted because they were apparently giving out weird readings. The max reading I got with soot volume was in excess of 60g initially!

I don't think the regen would have attempted to start if all the pre requisite conditions were not met but as per @J.R., the best thing to do is to drive the car or at least drive the car for a bit first to get everything up to temperature.

Then you need to be looking at those EGT/ DPF temps, if the DPF is not stinking hot, then something is wrong.

I think the OP is trying to perform a forced, not active regeneration of the DPF, to do this the car needs to be stationary.

Another few pointers, the car won't regenerate if there isn't a pre-set amount of fuel in the tank, or if the EML is on for another reason i.e. a faulty EGR valve.

The DPF and EGR are designed to work as a team, if one isn't working properly then there is a good change the other won't be able to either. I would want to satisfy myself that the EGR was working properly before digging too deeply into the DPF.

You mentioned the car was smoking? Even with a defective DPF you shouldn't see black smoke (soot), only blue smoke (unburnt oil) or white smoke (unburnt diesel). Assuming it was blue smoke then it sounds like there is oil in the exhaust and that means it is in the DPF too. If the internals of the DPF are smothered in engine oil then it's going to severely struggle to regenerate.

When was the EA189 Skoda emissions fix carried out? It is well documented as exposing weaknesses in the EGR.

If the car is a keeper (presumably it is after a new turbo, DPF sensors and throttle body) then to me the best way out of this, and for some peace of mind is a new (or professionally cleaned) EGR and/or DPF.

After a new turbo, EGR and DPF the big ticket expenses are largely out of the way.

Not sure why this thread was moved to 'General Automotive Chat' as it is specific to the Octavia, but a new DPF can be had for less than £500 these days...

Silver 1011, thanks for the input, no idea when the EA189 Emissions fix was done but not while I have had the car nearly 3 years now? How, or who, could 'roll' it back. The garage fitted a new Lambda sensor and Pressure Sensor but may have not coded one or both (if they need it) to the ECU? Some instances say the pressure sensor does, others don't. Just looked at an old posting about pressure sensors which gives similar symptoms to mine.

Will run a few checks on this see what shows up, but I am coming to the conclusion that may need the DPF professionally cleaned to sort out the problem

**UPDATE**UPDATE**

Just thought I would update the forum on where I am out now with the dreaded DPF issue! After going through various 'fixes' and testing decided to go back to basics and the start of the problem. The start, as I mentioned, was after having the Turbo & Throttle Body replaced. All was initially well but then the issue with the DPF came along, blowing smoke out the exhaust, excessive soot readings, failed re-generations and so on. So, going back to the repairs I began to check and rest the values using VCDS on the parts that the garage had replaced, Throttle Body, Lambda Sensor and DPF Pressure Differential Sensor. I 'chemically cleaned' the DPF using the JLM System that I purchased, (along with a new Air Compressor), as well as running 2 cans of Wynns Professional EGR Cleaner through the intake system. Having done all this I have been successful in finally having No Faults following an Auto Scan with VCDS, No EML Light on, No DPF Filter Light on and No 'Flashing' Glow Plug Light (other than when the Re-Generation was on the go, which, incidentally took around 40 minutes to complete!). I have attached the scans below and hope this is the end of the problems (for now) but given what I have gone through and with the age and mileage of the car may be time for me to move it on from my small fleet either by selling it on or part exchanging it against a newer vehicle for my business as this one had become the 'spare'. That said, with my newer VAG vehicles, the VW Sharan & Seat Alhambra not achieving the mpg figures earlier versions did and the added potential issues with the Ad Blue system in the future may consider moving to petrol or Hybrid although the new Skoda Hybrid is plug in and cannot give anywhere near the range I need in my business, pity.

I dont understand it like most VCDS terms but it does look significant and also out of place.

Have you done any "adaptation" changes?
