Help with coolant change, please

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 1.2TSI (CBZA) and changed the coolant this weekend as part of a bigger service.

I couldn't find a drain **** so just removed the bottom hose of the radiator when draining.

Anyway, I flushed and refilled but now it seems the system is not working properly (doesn't seem to open and use radiator to cool once engine is hot)?

I suppose it could be a faulty thermostat but my initial suspicion is an air pocket or similar.

Has anyone got any advice on how I might solve this? I looked on the hoses and block for some bleeder screws etc but didn't see any - I got as much air out of the system as I could when refilling by 'burping' the system (squeezing the top radiator hose).

Thanks.

I just did this last week, also a CBZA, you drain the system by removing the bottom hose of the radiator, like you did, and the bottom hose in the charge air cooler in the front.

Did you measure how much liquid you got out and how much you put in? I got about 5Litres out of it.

Also if you mean not working properly by fan not kicking in my fan also didn't kick in even when coolant was at 105ºC, I just drove the car a few kms and the reservoir dropped and I had to fill it back up and now it stays level.

Hi, I have a 2013 fabia diesel monte carlo. The reservoir needs topping up with coolant and the nearest I can source is Prestone Universal. Do you know if this is ok to use. It doesn't say its g12.  If not can you tell me what you used in your one please? Thanks

I think Preston claim to be able to mix with all coolant types. I would most likely use it and plan a full change when all this "C" business is over and you can get what you prefer.

thank you. good advice.

Thanks for your reply and sorry for the delayed response, I only just got notification. I didn't measure the quantities in & out exactly (I know, hindsight and all that) but what came out roughly went in again (between 4 & 5 litres).

After a top-up the level hasn't dropped. I popped into a local garage when there happened to be someone around and they said that it was normal that the radiator circuit might still be closed after a drive - apparently these engines like it hot (related to Euro5 standards and wotnot according to him?). Anyway, he helped put my mind at rest and it sounds like you have had a similar experience so that's good. Thanks also for the link.

For what it's worth, I used Triple QX G13 concentrate, diluted about 60/40. It's strange because the expansion tank/reservoir in the car has G12 printed on it but the manual says to use G13. I think it was filled with G12 prior to the recent change, judging by the colour.

Great, thank very much for your suggestion.
