Mk1 vrs wagon start up noise (SAI?)

Featured Replies

I'll start with saying I don't know a great deal about cars, I bought my Vrs because I owned a fabia estate first, this has a lot more power and absolutely cavernous, I'm a cyclist and keen camper and having all that space to keep gear is a must.

When I first picked the car up I noticed it made a fairly loud but consistent whooshing or blowing sound which dies off after a minute or so. I questioned it and was told it was normal for this engine. The car ran fine so I accepted it.

I've had a good look around the Internet and I've found a lot of info saying that it's to do with a secondary air system heating the cat to pass emissions or something similar.

Recently though, I've had a few people telling me that they think somethings wrong, one of which is a friend who builds and modifies cars for himself, and who once owned another car with the 1.8T engine.

Has anyone got a video/ audio clip of what it should sound like, or some info on tell-tales signs that something may be off?

I've owned the car a year now and it's got through the Mot and service just fine, still runs great but I'm a little worried that there may be something bad coming.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I love the car and hope it lasts a few more years at least.

Secondary air intake doing its thing as normal. Don't worry about it, nothing's wrong.
