Starter system faulty. Workshop!

Featured Replies

Fault showing on a 2015 1.4 TSi SE L. I have found a similar post on the forum, but it related to a DSG and the reply referred to a probable brake pedal switch. My car has a manual box, however, so does anybody have any ideas what may be causing the error message in my case?

Many thanks

what's the error message?

Thanks for asking, it's that shown as the heading to the thread i.e. Starter system faulty. Workshop!

apologies, didn't twig to that

Have you anyway of doing a scan yourself to check to see if there are any errors flagging up with specific parts?

If it's a manual, could it be the clutch pedal switch?  (The clutch needs to be depressed to start the car, in the same way that the brake does on a DSG.)

tunedude: No problem!

Unable to get any scan done while this lockdown's still on, unfortunately.

iriches: Interesting thought. If/when it happens again I'll try depressing the clutch a few times before trying to start it again.

The first time the fault showed was after the engine had started, then while I was driving it the warning disappeared, and was replaced by a yellow warning triangle illuminated at the bottom of the instrument panel. After reaching my destination and switching off the engine, I tried to restart it but the engine wouldn't turn over. I left the car for about 20 minutes, came back to it, tried again and it started; no more warning or triangle. I have used the car a few times since with no problem until today. This time the engine started again and the warning was displayed. I removed the key, locked and unlocked the car until on the 3rd attempt the warning did not show and the car started normally both to and from my destination.

The only thing I have been doing differently recently is to alternate which key I have used and I am wondering if this might have anything to do with it. I haven't yet determined (can't remember!) if the fault occurs with both or just one of the keys.

Final point is that the keys are programmed slightly differently i.e. the regular key is programmed not to retract the door mirrors ( I did this myself a couple of years ago) whereas the 2nd key has been left with the original settings.

Hope this helps, or is it a red herring?

Cheers both

@Sahara with you saying the car is turning over with the clutch pedal down, that would lead you towards the switch as iriches is suggesting.

When it doesn't turn over, do you see any other error messages? You would get a message saying 'depress the clutch', or words to that effect.

Thanks for your thoughts, but for clarity, I am aware that the clutch pedal needs to be depressed for the engine to start, which is something I have always considered good practice anyway. My reference to doing it "a few times" was in response to the suggestion the fault may be to do with the clutch pedal switch, and if that was to be the case, then operating the pedal a few times might free the switch. Hope this now makes sense.
