Autoexpress says that 'Electric Cars can have green slash in their number-plates from the autumn.'

& 'Owners of electric cars across the UK will be able to fit....'

That sounds like a choice of fitting to EV cars that are on the road now if you choose, and they can be fitted to new cars from the Autumn.

Hopefully it is a choice thing and it will not be compulsory that 21 plate and on cars 'Must have fitted green flash plates'.

I wonder how many people will be sticking green bits on their non-electric cars trying to take advantage of various incentives on offer? 🤔

I drive an EV lease car so will be keen to see what comes of this.

One thing someone raised on another forum is that having a clearly identified electric vehicle could potentially assist the emergency services in the event of a fire or other situation involving an EV

that is a good point.

we had a 7.5T truck smack itself under one of our bridges last week, with a load bay full of batteries.

Fire Services took their sweet time declaring it safe to pull it out due to the massively increased risk.

Fair point on the Emergency & Fire Services.

So maybe the same applies now to Light Hybrids and Plug in Hybrids and fires, and Toyota have lots of Self Charge Hybrids on the roads without mention of accidents and fires.

I wonder how many Hybrid Yaris have been to the crusher and did not have the batteries removed before their demise.

I can imagine those Fire Fighters that are trying to find the Battery Pack of a 2007 Skoda Fabia vRS Hybrid having seen the boot badge.

So the plates can now go on new or already on the road EV's.

I read that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps MP is the first to have them on his car. (Halfords got a bit of publicity fitting them to his TESLA.)

Green stick on flashes should do the job perfectly well if the car already has plates.

Just seen this topic. Germany have had the E suffix for plug-ins since 2015. Less chance of fraud than buying a green sticker off flea-bay.

  • Plug-in electric vehicles. The 2015 Electric Mobility Act authorised issuing special licence plates for plug-in electric vehicles to allow proper identification to avoid abuses of these privileges.[15][16] The special licence plate adds the letter "E" at the end of the licence number. Owners of all-electric cars and plug-in hybrids with a minimum all-electric range of 30 km (19 mi) can apply for the special licence. The minimum range for eligible plug-in hybrids goes up to 40 km (25 mi) from 1 January 2018.[17][18]

^^^ That would have been 2 simply clever for the UK.

A Green Plate might show others that a vehicle can be in a bus lane, restricted areas etc but ANPR is still needed to check a vehicles class.

That is for the vehicles that are allowed because they are 'zero emissions' and the Green Flash Plates are not going to be compulsory.

I have had 'Traffic / Street wardens' checking out my car closely to see i had not stuck the charger in the fuel filler. One warden actually told me i had as he was preparing a ticket at a car park with chargers and free parking for EV's but a ticket machine for the other spaces.
