New radio - Canbus-h and Canbus-l

Featured Replies

Okey, so tried to look it up a few times, but still not sure about it. So asking specifically for my case.

I have a Skoda octavia mk 2 2005 2.0TD. I want to switch out the standard radio with one from joying.

This one:

My question is: what happens if I do not have a place to plug in the Canbus-H and Canbus-L pins? As in, they are not plugged into the radio.

They are already present on the loom connector, when you connect your new radio the canbus signals will be recieved by it as they were on the old radio.

How are they connected? Because the Canbus-H... pins from the original wires don't go anywhere. They end with the original.

What do you mean they don't go anywhere? They terminate in the quadlock connector with the rest of the wiring don't they?

At least they do on mine (which I checked yesterday), I also have replaced my Bolero stereo with an Android one which uses CANBUS and it works

I will put up pictures when I get home. But there are No cables going out from the original quadlock connector except ground and battery. (on the side with Canbus)

The others are Canbus-H, Canbus-L and alarm, which for now, don't have any way to connect to the New wiring harness, and all the way to the radio. Meaning, those three "pins" are not connected to the radio.

My question was: how does it affect my car that they are not connected.

Sorry I didn't realise you were using a wiring harness adapter. My Android stereo accepts the quadlock connector directly.

Does your new stereo have a CANBUS decoder? If no, you will need to wire an ignition switched live to it so it knows when to turn on and off. The OEM stereo uses CANBUS commands to turn on and off.

I have connected it to the headlights, which turn on with the car. So that problem is fixed.

Then there is no problem. Just needed to know i didn't make any important mistakes by not using the Canbus-H and Canbus-L.

You don't happen to know what the "alarm" one does aswell?

No not a problem, there will be a fault code stored in the CAN gateway as it won't be able to communicate with the stereo, but it won't bring up any dashboard warnings or affect anything else

Perfect, then i know there shouldn't be any problems.

Thank you very much, slow_nick, appreciate it a lot 🙏 have a good day!

You wont have full functionality of the head unit without the canbus data.

Wont stop you listening to music though!

Do you know which functions i miss out on?

You won't see the climate control or parking sensor display on the screen like the OEM stereo shows

Oh okay, well my car didn't have that on the old one either.

Nor doors, boot, bonnet open, trajectory lines for reversing camera, functions like volume changing with vehicle speed, pretty much anything that requires information from the vehicle.

Oh damn, okay. Do you know any converters from the quadlock to ISO wiring harness with Canbus decoder?

No doors? Does that mean i cant lock my doors with the key?

The OEM stereo can show the status of the doors/boot/bonnet but if you have maxidot you can see all this on the dashboard anyway. You can still lock the doors fine, replacing the stereo will not affect the function of anything in the car you will just lose some INFORMATION DISPLAY that the standard stereo can show but your aftermarket one cannot.

Okey, thanks. Nice someone knows this. Then i'll probably not do anything else. Radio turns on and off with the car and works.

Thank you for the Great response 🙏

If it does that and doesn't flatten the battery then you have a right result.

keep an eye on the battery charge for a while just to be sure, dont leave the car for more than a few days without either starting it or checking the battery voltage, if its OK over say a week then you can forget all about it, by not connecting the canbus you have probably dodged a bullet.
