2009 Superb 4x4 3.6 VR6 Howling/Whining

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone!

I have really taken a liking for the Mk2 Superb with 3.6 VR6 Engine and went to see one yesterday.  It has done 164k km and comes with full service history and seems like really well-maintained car.

What I did notice however was a whining/howling sound that was more or less present in pretty much every gear.  It appears when accelerating or also when lifting the gas pedal and decelarating.  When you put the car in neutral while moving, the howling stops.  This leads me to belive it might be DSG related.

I also made a video of experience.  I am hereby asking for the help of forum members and previous owners of the 4x4 VR6 Superb mk2 to talk about their experiences and help me understand whether this is something to be worried about?  Thanks in advance!

Hi people! Would really appreciate your feedback!

I have done quite a lot googling about the topic, but I am still confused 😞   Some seem to say that this is normal "feature" for DSG and Haldex 4x4 system. Others have indicated that this could be something in the DSG Box (e.g bearings).

In this case, the howling sound is present in all the gears (1-5). This leads me to think that maybe it is not the gearbox, but the diff? I also remember from one topic, that somebody mentioned alternator overload causing similar whine. However, alternator would also cause similar sound when driving and shifting to neutral, right? In this case, the howling stops when you push it out of gear to neutral while moving.

Thanks to anybody willing to share their opinion and previous experience!

Hi there,

As a fellow v6 owner with the equivalent of ~193,000Km on the car, I can only really hear any whining noise in your video when you're in 1st gear, and mine also makes a similar noise in 1st, especially when you lift off the accelerator and engine braking starts. I've covered ~80,000Km since I've had the car, including having the Haldex and DSG fluids etc changed according to the schedule and it's always been there.

Has yours had the haldex and DSG oil changes according to schedule? That would be what I'd look for in the service history to start with and get it done if it hasn't been.

Cheers,

Steve

As above. Sounds, dare I say, normal. Mine is on 169k kms - mind you your post was a year ago. Oops 😬 Did you buy the car?
