I have Octavia 2001 2.0 it's been a while since I have any issues with it. A month ago 1st gear was really hard to shift and everyday pass it gets worst until it refuses to shift to 1st gear at all. It's like the 1st gear spot is not there anymore and when I try to force it, it shift to 3rd gear.

Lately, I found a work around. So when I push down the gear stick a bit (feels like shifting reverse), it shift normally and softly to the first gear without any issues!!! And when I want to shift reverse I will have to push down the stick a bit harder (sometimes it take couble of tries to get it right). 

 

I have tried shifting from under the hood and it works normally.

 

Any ideas on what could cause this to happen?

 

Some mechanics asked me to change the oil, others were like (The car is old you need a gearbox !!!!) 

Try this, and also a gearbox oil change.
