Hi guys thanks for all your help on my other threads but now it seems I have a Suspension problem 😞

 

I had the shocks changed and then the power to the ECU went and I had loads of warning lights coming on so took it to a engine management specialist and he sorted all the ECU out and its running fine now but he did say the steering wheel had the yellow light still on and he said it may be the steering torque sensor,

 

I was driving it home and planning to ask for advice on Briskoda but 4 miles from home the steering wheel went red and I lost power steering, I carried on driving as I was quite close to home, turned the car off left it a min and started the car up and the steering warning light has now gone back to yellow and the power steering has come back up and running.

 

I rang the engine management  specialist and he said it could be the steering torque sensor or could be the plugs loose.

 

Can I get some advice please I couldn't afford to have that guy fix it as he said she would buy a new part from the main agents and I just dont have main agent cash and just paid him £250 to fix the ECU wiring problem, he put all new original  fuses in and cleaned out the ebox as it was a bit corroded.

 

 

or can someone help me pick out a 2nd hand steering rack from ebay please? I have no idea which numbers have to match up and if it comes with the electric steering parts could really use some help please

It could well be a remaining fuse or oxidised connection problem, the electric power steering is the most current hungry accessory and is the first to throw up fault codes when its supply voltage drops be it through a weak battery or voltage drop across a bad connection like the ECU fuse problem.

 

I would start by checking & cleaning all the supply connections and the earths, then have a VCDS scan before playing parts bingo on the say-so of people that say "its most likely................." like the person who said your ECU was most likely to be the problem.

 

Is the battery old? The car has been standing a while, dependant on how far your return journey was it may need charging.

Thanks, its a new battery J.R  about 4 months old and it's been on charge for the last 4 days, but I dont drive much so connections could be the problem, is it the plugs into the steering rack that will need checking? are there any others? all fuses are new

I dont know, I simply know on a practical level that everything must be perfect or the power steering will be the first to play up and throw fault codes.

 

Someone else who has resolved the issue will be able to advise what are the likely high resistance points.

To be honest, it sounds like one of the electrical connections or fuse-holders haven't been cleaned/connected properly which led to a brief power outage to the power steering and it got upset.

 

Certainly feels more likely to be that give the work you've had done rather than an actual failure of the steering rack...

 

Are you able to scan it for fault codes and post that? Did the yellow light go out after a short drive?

Hi Langers2k thanks for the advice I do have a scanner and will go out in a few mins and scan it, No the yellow light was on all through the 25 miles drive home from the garage but the steering was working fine till the last 5 miles then the yellow light went red beeped but I lost the power steering, I never wanted to stop and just get the car home, when I got home I turned off the engine and restarted the car and the steering light went back to yellow and now the steering is working again.

 

will go out in a min when my carer leaves and scan it I bought a Ross-Tech VCDS HEX-V2 3VIN which I have only used once I was going to find some tuts on using it correctly but I think i should be able to find a fault code

A VCDS autoscan is perfect.

 

There is a guide here, useful bits are 48 seconds onwards (how to autoscan, you have a CAN-gateway) and once complete, hit the copy button in VCDS and then paste it into a forum post

Given that, I'd try clearing the codes to start which should remove the yellow light. As it's intermittent and you've just had a load of electrical work done, I'd be trying "Check Steering Assist Power Supply (Terminal 15)" and "Check Fuse(s)" before considering a new steering rack.

 

You can also try this to check the Steering Torque Sensor (G269)

Oh FFs now the rad fan wont turn off even with the key out and car locked, if i start it up if stops till I turn it off, had to take the fuse out to stop the battery running down

Could that be DPF regen related?

 

No wonder some owners take to buying a box of matches and calling their insurance company!

Had a quick look, connections on the power steering include:

- T2p/1 (Terminal 31/ground)

- T2p/2 (Terminal 30/permanent power) is fed from a 80a fuse (SA2) of the main busbar (slot 2)

- T5e/1 (CAN-L)

- T5e/2 (CAN-H)

- T5e/4 (Terminal 15/switched power) is fed from a 5a fuse (SC6) of the passenger compartment (slot 6) which agrees with the owners manual

- T5g/2/3/4/5 all go to G269, I'm not sure if this connector is accessible or if it's internal to the steering rack

 

The three T5e/x wires all go via an extra connector named T6j described as a 6-pin connector, on front left in engine compartment (black).

 

Given nothing else is complaining about terminal 15, the fuse it probably fine but it's worth load testing the terminal 15 supply at T5e and T6j if you can find them. I can't be 100% certain the diagrams I have match your car either.

 

No idea what's happening regarding the fans I'm afraid. Can't help but feel there might be more corrosion somewhere...

yes I checked the fuses and there ok as only fitted yesterday new.

 

I dont know what (CAN-L) & H or main busbar are sorry mate not learnt all the terminology for the wiring yet Terminal 30 and 31 which plug are they to be found,

Look for a wiring connector onto the main fan and disconnect it if you can, then have a look at the contacts inside the connector, see if there's any water in there, or evidence of corrosion.
