Do I need to change timing belt tensioner?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I just changed timing belt on my CRDI engine clocked 140000 KM.

Physical inspection of timing tensioner and pulley shows no sign of wear off and engine is running fine after belt replacement.

Need advice should I also change tensioner and pulley since they been used for 140000KM? what would be adverse effect of not changing?

They might last as long as a new belt but I don't see why you would go through the effort of changing the belt but not the tensioner and pulley? They're all going to have wear to some degree and for peace of mind it's worth changing them. You're already questioning whether or not you should have done them and you're going to think about it every time you drive, I would say it's worth doing. Adverse effect would be a destroyed engine!

My mechanic said they are in good condition and replacement is not required..

Thanks for helping me decide 🙂

Normally tensioners/pulleys are changed together with the belts, especially when it has to do with timing system .

No any major costs  and as referred it's for peace of mind and for preventing from  happening the bad... of course.

A reasonable number of timing belt failures are in reality tensioner failures, as has been said by previous poster I can't understand why when you are going to the effort to change the belt you wouldnt change tensioner  nowt as odd as folk as they say.

Then ask why and you might understand instead of condemning.

Open your mind.

Think I will just turn on tune in and drop out, like an old timing tensioner.

Up tight, outa sight and in the groove!
