I was driving at about 77 MpH and had a sudden loss of power on the way to the airport. The car could hardly crawl up hills. After switching off and on the engine the light was off and power was back.

The car has the scandal 2l TDI. 6 years old and 54000M on the clock.

I have no DTC reading yet. On holiday.

Is this the EGR?

It could be the EGR or DPF sensor or anything.  It would usually log a code if the coil/EML was illuminated. Make sure you are using a decent reader of codes for Skoda cars.

This is and update for the coil warning light I had last week.

On the way back there was no warning light and all the power was back.

 

The autoscan says that it is not the coil or DPF, but the actuator for the turbo waste gate was stuck, whatever this means.

Googling for the codes is not very conclusive.

Has anyone got experience with the codes?

Seems the turbo or the actuator may need cleaning at a guess.

I tried to use the measuring block apporach, but cannot get into the measuring blocks in STG 01 as it is greyed out. Is there a way to make button 08 accessible?

Your ECU doesn't support measuring blocks. Use the adv meas values instead 👍

I did look through those, but I could not find a value with a similar name to block 011 - actuator, N75, Turbo actuator...- in the measuring blocks.

It won't have 'block 11' or any other block in the name - that's specific to the older measuring blocks for pre UDS ECU's.

I did not have a problem all winter - basically since September 2020, but then I did not drive much.

Reading accross forums someone suggested that this error sometimes occurrs when the actuator heats up too much, and I only have the problem when driving on a really hot day.

I looked into solutions - it looks as if the actuator needs to be replaced.

 

Has anyone replaced an actuator on a CFGB engine? It seems like you need small womens' or children's hands on top of a couple of odd shaped spanners. With access this looks quite straight forward.

Which turbocharger is bolted onto the CFGB, a garrett or borgwarner one?

I had  something similar happen to me on a CR 170 Octavia RS - orange dash lights, total loss of power, wouldn't rev past about 2500 - 3000 rpm (ie no boost) etc.

I'm afraid that not having the space/skills/time to do the work myself I took the easy route & had it done at my trusted local independent VAG specialist.

From memory, I think the actuator itself was around £100 and labour was a morning's worth, so if you decide to let someone else do it, it shouldn't be silly money I wouldn't have thought.

Did you try Skoda? Or did you go straight to an independant?

I am ony asking because I contacted Skoda parts so far - and waiting for the repairshop to call back - and Skoda's reply was that there is no repair kit, i.e. replacement actuator for the CR 170 CFGB engine, which uses the Honeywell / Garrett turbo. There is an official Skoda kit for the Borgwarner on the CR 140 engine.

There are however actuators for the CR170 from "independant" manufacturers.

 

Skoda parts suggested they would prop a complete new turbo for a couple og grand in.

I'm afraid that I no longer have the car and all the receipts and servicing info were passed onto the new owner.

 

However if it helps, the car was a 2009 (59 plate) 2.0 170 CR vRS which was subject to the widely-publicised 'Dieselgate' recall for the remapping a few years back.

 

I went directly to my VAG specialist as he has looked after all my Skodas since I first started driving them back in 2009.

 

He's a qualified VW Master Technician with many years of experience of the group and I trust him implicitly.
