Headlight range control

Featured Replies

So I've jumped in the car to go shopping , switched the headlights on & get a warning on maxidot  check drivers dipped beam, I can see from reflection off garage door they are both lit , by the time I've reversed off the drive it has changed to the message headlight range control with yellow triangle below it.

Its a new 1 on me, can anyone  shed a light on it ? ( pardon the  pun ) I switched ignition off then back on & warning cleared  .

mk 3 facelift SEL.

Assume they are LED being MK3 Facelift?  I had the same warnings on my Oct 2 Scout with Xenons and it was an issue (for me) with water in the plug that connected to the headlight levelling sensor on the from arm - Thats why mine was temperamental as it would dry out and it was then a weather dependant issue.  Once I had worked that out I siliconed it and it was fine.

For you, my guess would have been a faulty levelling sensor (either front or rear) or plug / wiring to said levelling sensors.  The fact it cleared itself (and assume it didn't come back on) is a strange one.

Your lights should self test (up and down) when starting up regardless of whether lights are on - If you get that warning again I'd expect the light to stay in the down position as it 'protects' on coming drivers from being potentially dazzled.

Really you want to put diags on it so at least you know where to start looking if it happens again.

Hi ScoutCJB  Thanks for that

Yes they are LED , I've been out tonight & everything is working fine no fault indication switched headlights on and they did  the usual up/down routine the light pattern on the road is normal so all is good for now at least ,I don't have any diagnostics so cant check for anything.

If it happens again and you are able to, see if the lights both self test or whether only one does - In a nutshell both self testing would to me indicate a sensor, plug, wiring issue and if just one self tests then id suggest an issue with motor in the light.

Yes its happened again , no warnings but headlights are  no longer self testing. I switch them on & they just sit there as it were , the light pattern on the garage door and road looks normal , I've been down a unlit road passed plenty of  cars going other way & no one flashed me .  but it's an issue as presumably if i had anything heavy in back of car the headlights will be pointing at the clouds.

I will take it to local garage soon & have it checked out.

Why did the problem first  occur just 2 days after warranty expired ?   .

Ok,

Did this happen at night and you turned ignition on (lights came straight on) and they didn't self test, or did you turn ignition on in lighter hours and then you manually turn lights on in which case it may have already self tested but you wouldn't have seen it?

The fact there was no dash error suggests there wasn't an issue - The error will be there for a long as the problem is (so for me when plug dried out, the message went, when it got damp the message came back).

I have also heard of success stories with cars 'just out of warranty' so if there is an issue its worth taking it up with the dealer ...... very soon, like now.

The 1st time the fault appeared in the dark while reversing off the drive through a tight squeeze i manually switched lights on & didn't notice a self test or lack of.

Last night in the dark switched ignition on & started engine DRL lit up as usual , manually switched headlights on & no self test tried a few times during the night having switched engine off . I thought that they self test every  time you get in the car in the dark & switch lights on .

Re the warranty i bought  the car 10/10/19 car  first registered 10/4/17 on buying the car dealer  added 6 months to original warranty as it were so giving me 12 months from purchase  .

I had the car serviced @ a different branch of same dealer 3 weeks ago I've had a  disagreement with dealer that serviced it regarding the service so sad to say there is no goodwill . I think the chance of getting it sorted as a goodwill gesture is very  slim so I'm not even going to try.

How close to the front of the car is the garage door (or anything) when you start it? Just wondering if the sensor is being freaked out when you start, due to close proximity of a garage door etc.

Don't see why it should, just a suggestion.

I've just tested the wife's Mini and they self test everytime you switch lights on - I started ignition turned lights on, they self test, turned light off and then back on and self tested again.  Tbh i thought they just self tested once when you switched the car on regardless of lights on or off.  I would go to car, switch lights on first, then start engine and see if they self test, otherwise You'd need a member on here to test and say exactly what happens on facelift LED's.

To resurrect this thread, does anyone know if a faulty levelling sensor triggers a warning message? I'm asking this because, although 2 Skoda dealers have told me all is ok, I still feel that the headlamps are a bit higher (especially my right one - we drive on the right side). I also dis a short test and climbed in the boot and the light level got higher and did not seem to go down...

That depends on the error on the sensor. I've had an issue with a lambda sensor before where it produces a constant 4V: that's incorrect but not incorrect enough for it to trigger a light. If the movement isn't detected, and there's only one sensor on the axle, it's going to be difficult for the car to pick that up, especially if it reports "ok".

Maybe dump some extra weight in there and go for a short drive and then remove it and repeat?

I've placed the car in front of a wall, started engine, headlights on Auto. Climbed in the boot and the light "line" went higher and did not go lower to the previously marked line.

I hate going again to a dealer to check things... but unfortunately I guess I'll have to..
