Headlight (Dip) now yellow/orange instead of white !

Featured Replies

I’ve had the same fault appear twice - “headlight Dip beam failure” it’s gone from being bright white to a yellow/orange.

is this a hid unit replacement ?

Yes, going my my experience it's just a failed HID bulb. They are simple to replace yourself - don't believe the hype that it's a main dealer only job.

One of mine failed last year, going the same way as yours - the original bulb on a 2014 car, so not bad. I figured that the other side was probably going to go the same way, so I bought a new pair from Halfords, their own brand ones. Was £120 the pair with my trade card discount. Then all I did was remove the covers on the backs of the lamp units, unplug the connector, twist the old bulb out and pop the new ones in. All done with the ignition switched off. Once fitted, they both worked perfectly straight away with no fault codes, and have been perfect ever since.

Hope this helps!

With HID's it's always recommended to replace both bulbs - there will be a colour difference between the new one and one of any age.

Only problem of course is they aren't cheap.

Thanks for the replies, the price for the HiD bulbs vary so much between suppliers is crazy, in some cases it’s nearly £90 difference for exactly the same unit.

so I will shop around, I have Philips D3S 35w units but there is no lumens rating eg 4500/5000/7000 ?

Not sure if you mean lumens or colour temperature, but the lower the K number, the yellower they will appear. Higher numbers go through blue all the way to purple. OEM is usually 4300 or 5000k. Any higher can look artificially 'blue' IMHO.

6000k is as bright as I would go and gives a nice white output.

All road legal D3S bulbs will be around the same brightness as they need to be 3200lm ± 15% to meet ECE regulations. As for colour temperature, most are in the 4000 to 6000k range so if you stick to that, it'll be fine. It's hard to show the difference the colour temperature makes with pictures as most are photoshopped for marketing reasons ;)

In my opinion, it's important is to buy genuine, branded (Osram/Philips) bulbs from a official/reputable supplier as there are loads of fakes in the market.

I've used powerbulbs a few times and never had a problem, here are a few D3S in rough order of colour temperature:

- £48 per side: https://www.powerbulbs.com/product/osram-xenarc-classic-d3s-single

- £78 per side: https://www.powerbulbs.com/product/xenon-vision-d3s-42403-single

- £55 per side: https://www.powerbulbs.com/product/osram-xenarc-d3s-mercury-free-single

- £88 per side: https://www.powerbulbs.com/product/philips-xenon-x-treme-vision-gen2-d3s-single

- £145 for the pair: https://www.powerbulbs.com/product/osram-xenarc-cool-blue-intense-d3s-twin

Prices correct at time of writing but may change. Personally, I'd do both sides and either spend £110 on the Osram Xenarc or £145 on the Osram Xenarc Cool Blue Intense :)

+1, dont go any higher Kelvin as you then comprimise the brightness that the bulb puts out

Genuine Osram come with a unique code that you can verify on-line - I would only buy from a known re-seller.  Ive run the Osram Xenarc Night Breaker in the wifes old MINI and they were spot on.
