Vrs tdi 170 turbo whiring noise.

Featured Replies

Hi all hope your well, new to the site, got some great info from here so thought id better join 🙂 wondered if any could shed some light on my issue. Got a 58 plate octavia vrs tdi dsg model, love the thing to bits, more than my m135i iih lol. Got a funny whiring noise from around the glove box area at slow speeds. I've messed around with diesels before fitting silly air filters etc..lol And you always get a dodgy delayed whooshy noise from the turbo, this is similar, it's normally followed by the turbo flutter which sounds good but this whiring sound is annoying, I suspected it could be something loose around the air box, it's a bit rattly but not bad. At first I thought it could be the gearbox but def seems related to the turbo/intake. Has anyone had anything like this? I've read about cracked intercooler and plastic pipes, performance seems unaffected still gets a wiggle on the old girl! Just wish it would shut up a bit lol. All the best guys, stay safe!

Just to add, I also get that police siren noise from the turbo (not that loud) checked the Inlet side of the turbo, impellers look mint and almost zero play in the shaft.

Hi I have the same issue with my Octy VRS LE. I have a suspected boost leak in my intercooler pipe and breather/pcv. I also had some oil from both turbo pipe connections but no cracks so just tightnend them with new o rings.

Also only happens when accelerating not when idle  Ive attached pics of where the oil was coming from but defo need a new intercooler and pipes

Nice one dude il have a route around my charge pipes and intercooler def sounds like a leak somewhere. Had quite a bit of oil under the intake manifold on the intake boost pipe which Ive cleaned up when doing a recent oil change.

No worries dude, let me know how u get on. I only discoverd mine after the same oil discoverd by Skoda health check and the police whining noise. Gonna clean my intake and egr aswell then get catch can

Hey bud, any joy with your motor? Did you change your intercooler? I can't find anything on mine I'm pretty stumped, pipework all seems fine. Haven't done a boost leak check yet though but I'm sure intercooler OK. No performance loss at all. It seems to only do it when engine warm. I'm sure it's related to air intake as you can hear turbo in sync with the noise. It's when im plodding along I get a sort of constant whiring/whooshy noise which does sound a bit like a worn bearing. The sound is coming from the passenger side (UK) I was quietly capping myself it could be the dsg box making the noise but I'm sure it's air intake. Checked turbo impeller again, very slight thrust play. Feels fine imo. It's realy annoying me this bloody noise! Lol

Hi mate, I haven't had a chance yet to do it just waiting on the pipes from TPS, only managed to clean the egr so far. Strangely enough that's exactly the same spot I'm hearing mine passenger side. I'm convinced may not be turbo at all but likely the air intake or a pipe somewhere in that area . I'll post the outcome once resolved . Scanned car for codes and all clear bar glow plugs.

Reckon may even be  mechanicle. Only whilst accelerating.

I also replaced the PCV breather pipe as it was cracked but has had little affect.

Hi matey just an update I think I may have cured the whining problem albeit a temporary fix. It was the o rings on both turbo pipes had gone as in the photo above and were spewing out lots of oil. Had to give them a good clean and re-tightened the bolts and pipework including jubilee clips. Went for a drive and funny enough the sound had disappeared altogether throughout the rev range.

Also before I did this the noise was happening during idle which it didn't do before so gonna replace the o rings and maybe get silicone pipes.

Hey bud do you know the part numbers or the actual size of those turbo o rings, I've ordered the intercooler ones just not sure about the others. All the best pal.
