Clockspring Replacement - VCDS or something more

Featured Replies

Hello all, it's been a while as I sold my little Fabia VRs a few years back but now that the wife has a Superb Estate, I'm back again on the hunt for advice...

I'm pretty sure the clock spring has gone based on airbag light, horn not working and buttons not working on the steering wheel. She had taken it to the local garage and been quoted almost £600 for the repair which seemed a lot! I know the part is £200+ new but I'm hoping I can source one elsewhere for less and am happy fitting myself. From what I understand, it's a case of taking the code from the current one before removing it, replacing the part and then re-coding the new one to match the old one so it should be a case of just finding someone locally (Basingstoke) that has VCDS and can assist with the coding part.

What has confused me though is that the local garage have said that part of their quote was to get someone along to do the coding because they can't do it themselves and it requires a special tool that costs about £10k. Is this right or rubbish? From everything I have seen it's VCDS that gets used and I didn't think it was that expensive...

Thanks in advance, I'm sure there'll be more that I come back for!

I'm sorry I can't be much help but my yeti has the same problems since last week. Mechanic put it on the diagnostic machine to tell me what I had guessed already from reading these great forums but my problem seems to be getting the OME code for the clockspring part. Main dealer will only supply part  not code but looking at them online from good sellers there is big savings to be made. YouTube is making me think I could nearly diy myself but Im still worried I could wreck it also. I did find the code online from cross referenceing different products for the same part.

There is a proper nice gentleman based in Oldham (and Birmingham) on eBay who I’d recommend who repairs the original clock spring for 150 incl labour. Hence no need for reprogramming and includes resetting codes. Just had mine done (took roughly an hour). I really want to post in 6months time to give it a true test that it’s still working when the MOT is due. Watch this space. Clock spring repaired vin 5k0953569e. 5K0.953.569.E
