How long for oil to warm up? (1.4TSi)

Featured Replies

Noting today that the water temp is almost immediately up to the magic 90C, I thought I'd have a look to see when the oil got up to a decent operating temperature.

I was somewhat surprised that even at the end of my 10 mile drive home today (14C air temp), which included climbing the nice and steep Birdlip hill in Gloucestershire, the oil temp gauge on the (stop laughing) Sport display hadn't started registering.

I would have expected it to at least be showing 50*oC after 10 miles and when that is the ambient temp.

Any 1.4TSI i have driven, or any TSI in the past 10 years are at 50*oC and rising by 10 miles covered even when the air temp is at freezing or below.

Depends how much heat you're asking for from the heaters.

When I go in the car to work it's only 6km. By the time I'm there the oil temp is usually up to between 55c and 65c. Depends how cold it is.

The thing is I only have the climate set to 18c. I don't need a load of heat blasting out and would rathe that the engine gets up to temp a bit more. I usually have a jacket on and use the heated seat.

Something I've just thought of though. Do you have the under bonnet insulation?

Mine didn't come with it but I have added it myself.

Thanks both - what I expect I have is a software bug or dodgy sensor (likely the former as I've no warning lights etc)

Took it out this evening and within about a mile of slow driving in town (slow, but no traffic) the temp was showing over 50C and rising.

Considering that I deliberately did a couple of long climbs at lunchtime, the latter with the throttle buried in the carpet and the display happily showing 110kW and 30 something boosts (can't remember the unit but the gauge was all the way round), I can't believe that the oil temp didn't reach 50C

I checked the oil level and that's fine, so it seems that turning it off and back on again has answered my question - the oil temp goes up quite quickly :-)

Confirmed this morning - drove to work and within a mile or so the oil temp gauge started to move above 50C and the water temp gauge on the digital display didn't move even though the water temp on the clocks rose happily to 90. A quick flick from the dials to the (ridiculous) lap timer and back and the water temp was then showing 90.

Driving home after lunch, I fiddled around with the gauges after starting the car, and within 2 miles the water was at 90 and the oil was about 60.

So I now know the oil and water both warm up nice and quickly but the fancy display doesn't work reliably. Ho hum.

My 2.0 warms up faster than an Eskimo in a brothel !  It's pretty amazing. My previous 1.8Tsi was pretty quick and the 1.9Tdi before that was a nightmare .... I used to drive the bloody thing 7 miles to warm it up for the little 'un and it STILL wasn't warm !!!

Nick you are indeed well traveled. Is lap dancing the reason the Eskimo needs to remove their Polar Bear skin coat? No wonder Santa Claus is always smiling in Lapland.:blush

Welcome back :-)

Thanks currently working my way through Star Trek Discovery on Netflix as my reward for going on holiday to one of the safest places on Earth is now 2 weeks quarantine because we are deemed a health risk to the general public.
