Remove rear view mirror surround on MY20

Featured Replies

Does anyone know how to remove the plastic "cups" that surround the rear view mirror?

I downloaded the manual from Erwin but the pictures look nothing like what I have in my car.

This is what it looks like:

This is what Erwin thinks it looks like:

The only thing that pulls down easily is this part:

But I can't figure out how to get those two cups that surround the stalk of the rvm off without snapping something

Any thoughts?

Think I found a video, from an MY17 Golf R, that looks near enough for me to get an idea of how to pry it off:

And ironically the summary of parts in the workshop manual shows it well, just not the removal page:

Good luck, I get twitchy about "snap fit" parts too.

Being of a nosey disposition I've got to ask; why are you removing it?

Yeah, it was difficult to get off. It’s definitely not designed to be taken apart easily.

It was to tap into a 12v supply for a radar detector as I can’t be bothered hard wiring it to the fuse box, as it’s a RHD car. But in hindsight it probably would’ve been less finger destroying..

I took pictures of the part numbers for those interested
