Fixed vs Variable Servicing - 1.9 TDi SLX

Featured Replies

Bought my 200 X-reg Octy 1.9 TDi with 40k on the clock, and I have just booked it in for it's 50k service.

Dealer asked if I wanted to change to variable servicing, and I have a couple of questions.

1) I didn't think variable servicing was an option on a car of my age (I thought it came in when the Octys got rebagged)

2) I drive 20k a year. Which will be the most effective way of servicing in terms of cost and upkeep to the car.

Dealer said he would chat to me about it when I went in.

p.s Anyone know a rough price for a 50k service?

I just paid about £300 for a 40k variable service.

The variable is good, however I remember hearing that the cars tend to drink oil if you go from fixed to variable as the variable oil is thinner. (Can somebody confirm or deny this).

It depends on what sort of driving you do really. I do 99% motorway journeys so variable lasts a long time for me, but if your journeys are around town i would say fixed is probably better.

Hi Mate

I did not think that your car could do variable service?

May be wrong , but I believe that it is the facelifted models that can do this.

I would go the fixed service route myself.

I believe that it is best to have the car checked over every year or 10,000 miles.

Buth that would be my opinion.

Nice car though mate

Sarah

My thoughts same as Sarah...didn't think the ECU had the variable "intelligence" yet.

Mine just flashed service every 10k miles.

That's what I thought. I'll speak to the dealer when I take it in.

Thanks for your help.

my 1999 slx tdi doesnt have variable servicing so I get it done every 10k. I get mine done at a local independant garage who specialises in VW,s. I have a lot more confidence in him than the local Skoda main dealer, uses genuine parts and is a lot cheaper(£30ph labour v's £50ph). I bought mine 2 years ago and have done almost 50k.is it worth using a main dealer for a car of your age? It won't make much of a difference when you come to resell. I would however Strongly advise against ANY of the fast fit type garages and a well known Scottish one with Clark in the name. I spent the last three years working in Trading Standards so you do hear and learn some interesting things.

Good luck with the car and enjoy it its a good drive with excellent running costs

Only using the dealer while I have the warrenty in place. I know you don't *have* to, but there's all sorts of get out clauses in the warrenty if you don't.

It wont be on variable, to old.
