Steering rack failure on 2016 VRS 230

Featured Replies

Got some errors on the dashboard the other day and no power steering. All errors were to do with steering: ESP, Tire Pressure, Cornering lights etc etc. Replaced the battery, cleared errors etc but they all come back on immediately after turning on the ignition.

Recovered to Skoda today and they have diagnosed a steering rack failure and are offering a 40% discount on a replacement which brings the cost to just over a grand. Can't believe I didn't have any symptoms of this before it failed, Anyway, looks like I'll have to suck it up and get it repaired. Had the water pump replaced in the summer and they year before that the turbo replaced, not particularly reliable this car. Perhaps it was one of the Friday afternoon cars!

Sorry to hear of your stress. Your car shouldn't be having major problems at such a young age, although I don't know the mileage.

Before Skoda start, might it be worth looking at power steering specialists or people that rebuild steering racks?

Have they shown you a printout of the fault code/diagnosis? I would be asking to see how they came to that conclusion before authorising any work.

It's done 29,000 miles so low for the age. Bought it at 2 years old so no idea of the driving style before mine, which isn't too aggressive. I think being sat on the drive these last 10 months and only doing sporadic journeys isn't doing any favours to it,
