Flat Battery

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have 1.7Tdi Skoda Estate and I am having problems with my car battery. I went to start my car today only to hear it struggle to even turn over. Once I got it started I now have the warning light for the glow plugs flashing. I have nothing plugged in and I switch off all I can before I lock the car. Also on occasions I hear the car revving at 1000rpm with a smell from the rear of the car. The fan then stays on after I have locked the car.

all information gratefully appreciated,

jon

Sounds like your battery is kaput. The fan staying on is probably the car being switched off while in the middle of doing a dpf regeneration.

Cheers for the feedback. I can’t seem to find anything in my handbook for dpf regeneration?  And my battery has nothing to show it’s not charging as it should ?
Are there any checks I can carry out to confirm my battery is kaput ...

A kaput battery will appear to take charge but won't hold it, as a rough test measure the battery voltage just after getting home and again a few hours later - if the first is over 12 but under 15 and the second is under 12 then the battery likely isn't holding charge.

The only way to be sure is with a battery tester which checks the ability of the battery to supply starting current - any workshop or car electrical place will have one.
