I currently have a skoda octavia 1.6 tdi mk3. With the car scene starting to move away from diesel i have become interested in the petrol versions. 

 

I do a mixture of short journeys (to and from work 2 miles per day)  and longer ones (30-200 miles in a day) on occasion with a lot of hilly roads so i am not sure if a 1.0tsi would be enough compared to the 1.6tdi.

 

I could go down the route of a 1.5tsi but a 1.0 is whats available in my area just now so do you think it can compare to the 1.6 tdi with regards to power.

 

I rarely ever drive on the motorway the vast majority of my driving is on 60mph single carriageway roads winding through the hills of Scotland.

The newer petrols are very good. Not a Skoda but my wifes 1.5l 3 cyl Mini Clubman Cooper 140bhp engine is surprisingly good. The 1.0Tsi will need revving a bit to make it go so will be a bit different to the torque of a diesel. However I would try and get a test drive in one to see if it meets your needs. 

I like you will make the switch back to petrol. I already have in sight a Superb 280 4x4 estate L&K for next year.

Had a polo 1.0 95hp the other day as hire car.  Was surprisingly good and I thought it was 1.2 till the guy told me.  Granted it was a smaller car but if you need the bigger space for occasions rather than the norm then it should be fine.  If desparatley needing more power then a pedal box and/or map will do wonders.

Neither the 1.0tsi or 1.6d Octavia have ever been sold in Australia where I live but looking at the respective figures and extrapolating from similar engines in other models that I have driven then I'd be surprised if there much difference in hill climbing ability between the two engines.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but I believe the 1.0tsi in the Octavia produces 200Nm from something like 2000-3500 rpm (I don't have a brochure) and I am guessing the 1.6d is 250Nm over something like 1700-2700rpm. Bearing the in mind the petrol engine model is likely lower geared and noticeably lighter with a wider rev range (low rev max torque to high rev max power) and much happier to rev out where required then I don't see that the small turbo petrol would be severely disadvantaged. It is probably faster in the 0-60 dash, the difference being the effective torque at the wheels 

Where I think you will see a major difference is during descents.

My larger 1.4tsi engine Octavia offers stuff-all engine braking on a long 12.5% (1in 8) gradient, even in low gears, so I imagine the 1.0tsi offers still less especially when compared to the 1.6d.

It just means that you will probably be using the brakes a lot more than you currently do which is not really a problem but something to be aware of.

 

That is the theory, now it just needs you to arrange a test drive when you can to confirm or disprove it.

I think you would prefer the 1.5tsi though.

 

I'm considering the locally available manual 1.0tsi Karoq and the newly released (here) manual 1.5tsi Scala which are similarly priced as possible replacements for my existing Octavia. Hopefully find some time for test drives over the next couple of weeks but I bet they don't have manuals available.

If you are worried about the environment, a modern diesel is less harmfull for the planet than a petrol due to the much lower CO2 and with a DPF, particulates are greatly reduced. Also, the purchase of a new car to replace it has a huge environment impact vs running your existing car. Even purchasing a s/h car has an impact as it feeds the chain further up for new cars and their impact. Even replacing your car with an electric one is just shifting the environmental impat from the user to the mining of the lithium and production of the electricity to power it.

 

If you are worried about cost of the fuel, the money you will spend replacing the 1.6 will buy you plenty of miles in it at the slightly more expensive fuel cost.

 

If you are worried about clean city zones like Bath, Bristol and Birmingham coming in to force, Euro 6 diesels are exempt (a big climb down for Bristol that were originally going to ban all privately owned diesel cars). They have finally realised how clean modern diesels actually are.

 

The best thing you can do (from an environmental pov) is to keep your existing car for as long as possible! All that is assuming that your 1.6 is viable and not on it's last legs or anything! :)

Basically you have no need of a 1.6 TDI for your use as in the OP.

A 1.0TSI will do all you want and not worry about the short trips with cold starts.

 

The 1,6TDI is that green that in the Euro 5 there needed to be a defeat device, and then when they got SCR (AdBlue) in some models they are now discontinued.

Thats all good to know.

 

Mine is one of the last ones with ad blue. I think i will keep it for a while yet as see what happens but will consider a 1.0 tsi when the time comes.

I would go for the 1.4TSI. The distance and terrain will mean a lot of gear changes and higher revs. I have the DSG on a 67 plate and couldn’t be happier. It’s damn quick off the mark too.

Looks like i am going down the route of a 1.5 tsi Superb. We will see.

Donald - if you haven't made up your mind yet, my husband is about to sell his 18k miles 68 plate Octavia SE 1.0TSI Hatchback in Red in the next week.  It will be traded in at West End Skoda in Stirling - and its a cracking car with some tasteful upgrades.  PM me if you want further details.
