As a very inexperienced EBayer, can anyone (Alex? where are you? ) point me to a facility to contact an EBay seller (item auction in progress) in such a way that the message doesn't appear in public?

I've found the "contact this member" button, but it seems to redirect to the "ask a question" screen :confused:

I'm trying to send the vendor my 'phone number as he (she?) has invited viewings ...

The ask a question screen only goes public if the vendor opts for it too when he replies, so no probs using that.

and if you win an item / sell an item, you can go into advanced search in the top right, then click "find contact information" and you can plumb in the item number and ID of the ebayer and you'll be emailed there contact info - assuming its not a con merchant the phone number will be genuine.
