Octavia VRS (diesel) high oil usage issue

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I've had my Octavia VRS for about 2.5 years now. Since around it was serviced in 2020 (July) it seems to be going through a lot of oil, but we also bought a caravan around the same time and towed it 3 times. I have topped up between 2 and 3 litres in the last 5k miles (if not less). Due to COVID it hasn't done much mileage but it's still gone through a lot.

I had no issues prior that I was aware of. There are never oil spots on the drive and when I inspect using a torch I can't see any evidence of oil on the undertray or around engine. Oil seems to run at around 100deg.

One thing I have noticed, which may be normal, is if I were to drive and then take the oil cap off there is a lot of vapour coming out. Not sure if that's normal or not, I've never noticed it on any other cars I've had (petrol or diesel).

Any ideas guys?

How many miles has it done? Did you have to top up the oil much before the last service? I’d be tempted to give it another oil and filer change to see if that makes any difference

It's on 92k now, it was serviced around 88k. I'm happy to do the oil and filter on it. It had the cambelt done around 78k miles.

What oil are you running on? Should be proper grade 0-30W 504/507 Skoda/VW Longlife grade oil. Even my TDI 184 burns some oil (I have to put in a 200ml every 3000 miles or so) so you shouldn't worry too much.  Towing will put additional pressure on the engine and cause it to use more fluids (coolant and oil), so proper quality oil/filter is even more important.

I’ve got the exact same problem with the exact same mileage. Ours is a 2015 vrs diesel, probably done 2 or 3000 miles since last oil and filter change and the oil level light has come on again. No signs of any leaks.

The oil vapour is normal when taking the cap off after you’ve drove it.

Your oil can be running at nearly 100 degrees depending on how long youve been driving so there’s bound to be some vapour.

On average the books says it will use 0.5l of oil in 1000km. Or 0.8 of a pint to every 621 miles. Also if you do lots of short runs it will use more oil as the car will regen alot more and oil is burnt up during the regen phase.

Actually the VW Group Owners Manuals talk about 0.5 litres in 1.000 km may be the oil consumption, and more in the fist 5,000 km.

It certainly does not say 'On average' anyplace.   "It may use as much as"

Driving in the UK at NSL's without towing are not the conditions where 0.5 litres in 1,000 km is acceptable as the oil useage.

So that is 1 litre in 1,242 miles.

That is not the Manufacturers tolerance and is not acceptable.  Regardless of someone at a dealership saying it is.

They have published that for many year for petrols & Diesels with, 3,4,5,6,8,10 & 12 Cylinders.

Engines have been replaced under warranty that used 0.3 litres in 1,000 km.

That is following Official Consumption tests carried out correctly and when the Engine Oil Weight is 856 or 857 grams a litre, and not like when some muppet thinks it is 1,000 grams a litre.

The owner of this car did get a new engine when pointed out how a tech did not even know the weight of oil even though it is in the TPI and in the old Dynamic Test TPI also.

So this calculation was guff as many of the 300km tests were even when they knew the weight of oil.

Hi guys,

Sorry about the absence, been mental busy with a young baby, 2 house sales, business etc!

So I filled it up to Max again around 5-6 weeks ago, maybe less, have done I'd say around 1k miles and the oil light came on again over the weekend. Checked it, it was just above Min, so I've put another ~300ml (rest of the bottle) in today, and it's come on again this evening. A local Skoda specialist is going to do a service on it for me (it's due around August) with genuine parts and oil, check for any obvious signs of leaks, and we'll see how it goes. He said if we start stripping the engine it's going to cost around £2k which I'm definitely not doing :(
