Tail gate problem

Featured Replies

Hello,

The auto tailgate has stopped working correctly on my car. It opens slightly, beeps then closes again. I have taken it to a garage who have stated the struts may have gone and are quoting me up to £800 to fix. Seems high!  has anyone had a similar problem before?

Thanks

How old is the car. There are you videos about repairing and cleaning but it’s not for the faint hearted. Do not oil the pistons that will destroy them. Some people have removed them and replaced with manual struts because of the cost. I think they are about £300 each plus Labour, but they aren’t difficult to fit.

@jellywirewe need a VCDS or ODBEleven scan of your car to see what faults are being flagged, but @FrankNicklinis right - its probably a struct that has failed.  What is your car and what mileage has it done and is it still under warranty (please put details into your profile)

Search for "struts" in this forum. Quite a few threads

Hi, car is 2014 and on 70000k miles. It is an expensive job to convert the tailgate to a manual?

Not sure as you may need to update the VCDS to tell the car you nooner have an electric release. The tailgate switch will ty to activate the struts to raise them, you need it to just release the catch. May be others here can offer more assistance.

Thanks guys. I've managed to locate some struts so will fit tomorrow. Fingers crossed this solves the problem
