Which lambda sensor? BBM engine

Featured Replies

Hi,

Quickie. I have a Mk2 Fabia 60HTP with the BBM engine in it.

I have the fault code 'P0036' coming up repeatedly. I can reset it but it's back within a couple of journeys. I understand that this means that there is a problem with the lambda sensor downstream of the cat. More specifically, the heater in the sensor isn't working as it should.

Which model of sensor should I buy to replace it? I've been googling until my eyes have gone squiffy and I keep coming back to Bosch part number 0 258 010 038 and Bosch part number 0 258 986 507. Which one is the correct one? Or are both compatible?

(And, if I want to save some pennies, is there a cheaper brand that is worth spending money on instead of splashing out on the Bosch part? It seems that I can pay as little as £18 or so for a sensor from other 'Kerr Nelson' or 'Intermotor' but cheap car parts should be approached with caution in my experience.)

Thanks!

0 258 986 507 appears to be the one, equivalent to VW group part number 03D906265A

What prices are you seeing for that Bosch number?

Wino,

Thanks, that's really helpful.

That part number (0 258 986 507) fed into Google shows the cheapest sellers being on eBay. Here's AceParts (lots of good feedback), who will sell me one for £33.73.

And yet there is also xpzkhsuh who want £17.85 for something that in the small print claims to have the brand 'Bosch' but seems too cheap to be true.

There are numerous others made by various other people to choose from as well. FWIW, I quite like the look of the one from Ace Parts ... it just seems safer!

It's the post cat probe so cheap will be just fine, however be prepared for the code to be wiring related rather than the probe itself.

Hmm, looks like neither of those has the correct connector for it to be a straight, plug-in swap. (Unless the connector in the car looks like it would mate with anything shown in those listings. My mental image is a straight in-line 4-way?)

Are you happy to splice wiring into the old wires/connector?

I guess the supplied pins may fit in the OEM housing if you de-pin it?  Looks unlikely if the images are true to reality.

A universal sensor will work just fine but won't have the correct connector fitted.

Most eBay junk is universal.

Guys,

Thanks for the answers. All are helpful.

I'll confess that I haven't yet jacked the car up to take a look at things and a wiring fault is possible. If you don't erase the code then it goes out by itself after a while but comes back soon after. (I guess it is moved into a 'long-term' log of some kind if it hasn't happened in the last 20 starts or something). This suggests that the problem is intermittent so it could be wiring.

I'm quite happy re-wiring it, either by re-pinning the plug or by cutting wires and soldering the old plug onto the new sensor. However I'd need a pin-out diagram to know what goes to where.

Perhaps I should post up on here again when I've had it all up in the air to take a gander .... I'll post again when I have done so!

Thanks again.

Blue/red on pin 1 is 12V heater supply, only present when fuel pump relay is energised.

Brown/white* on pin 2 is heater control wire to/from engine ECU pin 13

Grey/white on 3 and grey/red on 4 are the sensor connections to engine ECU, pins 21 and 47 respectively.

*might be white/yellow depending on year.
