New water pump and belt.

Featured Replies

It's a 2011 1.2 .

36,500 miles.

It developed a coolant leak and the (trusted indie) has diagnosed a leaking pump and has ordered a new VW one plus he said he'll do the belt at the same time.

Would that be the cam belt?

I'm guessing that's gonna cost me a couple hunded quid?

Not complaining but am bracing meself.  Not had anything of note go wrong with it from new (apart from the DSG clutch pack and oil change and software update done under warranty).

Hi oldstan

A 2011 1.2 will have a chain driven cam.   I think the water pump is driven from the poly-vee belt.  You should be able to see this, it's not enclosed.  There is also an electrically driven auxiliary water pump somewhere, which can run even when the engine isn't turning.

Ah, chain cam.  Right you are.

And from what you say he's going to change the "poly vee" belt - which doesn't look to be hugely expensive.

I hope your 'trusted indie' prices are significantly lower than main dealer prices.

The water pump on mine failed last month after 4 years and 15,000 miles.  Replacement would have cost more than £400 - if I hadn't already spent £525 on an extended warranty when I bought the car.

Pump and cambelt on  mine cost around £650..(indy prices....).

^^^^  Ah, right you are, ta .... but as mine is a chain - and he's only doing the Vee belt, then presumably a bit less???

...yep, belt on mine not chain, so hopefully yours will be a little cheaper!!

The car is in the garage as we speak so we'll know soon enough.  He's awaiting one the items but can't remeber which ... he's changing the bottom hose too.

Bottom Hose

Waterpump

Drive belt

Pulley bolts

Mounting bolts

Anti freeze

Plus labour (which was £69)

Plus VAT

Total bill £279.

Could have been worse and I trust the fella.

Bargain!

Hi, I am new to Skoda.  I am assuming your leak was gradual rather than losing coolant rapidly? Did you get much notice? I just wondered if they can fail catastrophically, or whether they tend to leak slowly, giving you some time to book it in to the garage, rather than getting the AA out to tow you there.

Don't even know what side of my engine the pump is situated yet.

Robjon: The water pump on my Yeti failed last month at roughly 45,000 miles / 5 yearsish.  From subsequent reading it appears that premature failure of VW pumps is not uncommon - or in my opinion acceptable.  (Also see my recent thread on Coolants)

Re. the above ...

The pump is on the offside (front right).

I can confirm the leak was gradual and minor.  There's a small drilled hole at the bottom of the water pump and the staining around the hole indicated that it had been dripping for a while and only became noticeable when I spotted a small pool of liquid on the garage floor.

The bottom hose had become soft and de-laminated at the point underneath the water pump. The garage initially put a new clip on the hose thinking the leak was from the hose itself but it turned out to be the pump.

My car is ten years old so I have no real cause for complaint.
