To keep and repair or time to let it go.....

Featured Replies

Hi all, long time lurker on here, not contributed much I'm afraid...

I've had my 06 4x4 1.9 Octy for about 6 years now and apart from the gearbox output shaft needing shimming its been great. I work in the events industry so me and the wife need to tow generators, tower lights and a caravan over the summer often on muddy fields (when we get back to it) as well as needing a good family car.

It's had a whine from the engine bay for about the last three years at least. I've been told its a leak on the turbo pipe or maybe the the turbo bearing. It's now had the engine light come on. A scan has revealed these codes....

17055 - 58 Glow Plug Circuit (Active/static)

16706 Ign/Distributor Eng.Speed Inp..Circ - No Signal (Passive/Sporadic)

17978 Engine Control Module (ECM) disabled (Passive/Sporadic)

16785 EGR Flow Insufficient Detected (Active/Static)

From the Garage:

Main issues is EGR, tried to do basic setting but valve does nothing, Checked VAC signal was switching as it should. Tested EGR and it is leaking so not opening. Needs replacing. As EGR and turbo are controlled with VAC a new EGR vale could tip turbo over the edge therefore must replace both.

For this they quote about £1500. So, what to do? I've cleaned the EGR valve myself in the past and feel pretty confident about replacing it, is it true that it could take out the turbo? I do trust the garage but I don't have much spare change at the mo what with their being no work in events industry.

Any thoughts and comments welcome, thanks in advance.

Matt.

From recent experience (we're just about to move on our 2007 2.0 TDi 4x4) a repair of £1500 will be more than the trade-in value of the car and not far off it's private sale value.  They are pretty solid cars but it's how much you value it and what might go next  if it's been heavily used (propshaft couplings? engine mounts?, shocks?, springs?) or whether you'd be better sinking that £1500 into something newer.

I guess you'd be better off selling  for parts unless your able to do the work yourself. A few electrical issues there also I think.

Sounds like bull***t to me, with a new EGR not leaking away the vacuum the turbo should work correctly, running correctly within its limits is not going to "tip it over"

I would be looking at ways of blanking off the EGR both from recirculating the gases and also plugging the vaccum line, on my PD I had to drill a small hole in the blanking plate but there might be a simulateur/emulator available like I have fitted to my CR engine which would allow it to be deleted completely without triggering fault codes, they only cost about £100.

Cheers folks, I'm going to pull the EGR off tomorrow and see what state its in. With the EML on its not going to fetch much as resale so I doubt I have much to loose playing around with it. I've just ordered a new OBD2 reader as my last one seems to have packed up. Can anyone recommend a decent reader app for an Iphone as i've been through a few phones since I last used it?

Cheers folks.

I would definitely try and at least clean the EGR.

I can see why you would think now is the time to get rid, we thought the same for out Scout as even though it’s only done 112k it has had a hard previous life in the NHS.

Our 2012 MK2 Scout is certainly more desirable than our 2014 MK3 Estate if we were to try and sell it, making it more expensive to replace.
