205 or 225 tyres on Vrs MK1

Featured Replies

Hi folks.

Been looking into x4 tyres and looking at 225/45 as a possible option over the 205/50, bizarrely I am finding cheaper prices if I switch to 225, however am concerned on how they'll look.  The 205's do look perfectly matched for the stock alloys, I don't want a tyre that bubbles over the edge or looks like I'm into that mod the car to the point of fast n' furious.  Anybody have any pics of 225's or can comment on their looks or a preferred manufacturer?

Many thanks.

The Octavia MK1 VRS uses 312mm diameter front brake discs, so you don't need 17" wheels to clear the front brake calipers.

205/55R16 on 6.5Jx16 ET42 rims would fit.

According to wheel-size.com 225/45R17 will fit 7Jx17 ET38 rims.

Skoda Octavia 1996 1.8T

205/55R16  6.5Jx16 ET42 2.3

225/45R17  7Jx17 ET38 2.5

Well, 205 was the widest tyre fitted to any Octy1 as stock, on Elegance, L&K and vRS models (some vRS hatch, but not all, have 17" wheels).

I’ve ran both and find the 225/45 more planted to the road. And to be honest I’ve only ever bought 225/45. The 205/50’s have usually what come with the car when purchased. I also think they look better than the taller tyre. And yes, they will be cheaper as it’s a much more common size.

Often you can find a set of RS5 or EagleF1 or Falken F510 (x4) for under £240.

205/50 and 225/45 have about the same sidewall height.

To calculate the sidewall height, multiple the aspect ratio by the nominal tyre width.

Sidewall Height

205/50 = 102.5mm

225/45 = 101.25mm
