Engine shut down - cranks but no start

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Was driving on the highway during a rainstorm when the engine suddenly shut down when I tried to accelerate. Let it drift to the side of the road, started the engine again, it would start but runs like it's choking or not running on all cylinders.

Towed the car home the next day and it won't start at all, but it cranks. No faults in the dashboard, no warning lights. Tried changing the diesel filter, but it's the same.

I want to try to do as much as I can myself, any ideas about what I could check next?

Car is '15 station, manual, diesel, driven around 190.000km.

OK, does it spin properly on the starter or make horrible noises?

Spins properly, sounds just like it’s going to start normally for half a second and tries 2-3x to do so. Similar to when the car runs out of gas.

Could it be a faulty fuel pump?

Could be, you should hear the Fuel pump whine a bit when you turn the ignition key before cranking though. Could be the plugs, although I would have thought that you would have a code for that issue.

Yes, or an issue with the immobiliser.

Have you checked the timing belt is still intact?

Would urgent suggest getting the car onto a diagnostic CANBUS reader (ODBEleven/VCDS or dealer ODIS) to get some diagnostics.  Could be numerous issues.  Failures of pumps are recorded....failure of cambelt is not (other than timing issues).

It's already at the shop, will update the thread tomorrow when I get the diagnostics.
