Tailgate strut mount bolts

Featured Replies

Just a weird little thing happened a day or two ago, where one of the tailgate strut mounts on my Fabia, came completely loose and the strut popped off!

Made a scrapy-scrunchy noise as I closed the tailgate, which is how I noticed it but it could have been quiet  dangerous as the strut could have went through the rear glass!

I have never known this to happen before, on ANY vehicle so it was a surprise. It was the actual bolt section, that must have worked loose over time, as I raised and lowered the tailgate, not the actual ball joint part separating, which you might have expected. Anyway, I screwed it back in, popped the ball joint on again and all seems ok. I will most likely remove it again soon and tighten it up with a little thread lock, so as to prevent the same issue happening again. I will also take the opportunity to pack the ball joints with low melting point grease.

Bizarrely, my self-opening spring kit I fitted a few years ago, started to work properly again so a small result from a PITA!

Might well be worth looking at these joints occasionally, to be sure they are tight as I bet no-one does... I didn't!
