Which could be some easy or cheaper modifications for this?

Injectors were cleaned recently. Maybe an oem air filter? 98 petrol all the way? I'm not good with technical aspects. A new ECU or remap? That is costly i've heard.

I live in a city where if I'm not fast I might end up being 30mins late to work even if I leave early.

Define "costly". A generic remap might be £400 (top end), for about 10% better power and torque on a non-turbo engine.

You need to leave even earlier then. About 30 minutes earlier. Doubtful a fast car will make any difference at all if traffic is the problem. A faster car will however be more prone to serious accidents and speeding tickets

The "easy" or "cheaper" thing would've been buying a quicker car, but the way you describe it you don't live in a city but in a rally stage. Otherwise not even a car with three times the power will make a difference. 

 

I have to make 100 mile journeys regularly for work and study, and I've been in 30 bhp cars as well as 200 bhp cars, and I hadn't shaved any meaningful amount of time getting to my destination because of power, not even 10 minutes, much less half an hour.

 

If your city is all that terrible you should buy a motorcycle to zip through traffic, or move closer to where you work.

Buy a faster car. The 1.4 MPI, 8 valve is dog slow and there's not much you can do about it. The engine harks back to the 1960s and was used in the rear-engined Skodas. It's the only true Skoda engine that was used in the Fabia. Momentum and a following wind is your friend On the upside, it's a pretty durable engine. Timing chain rattle is the main bugbear with them as they have no chain tensioner by design. Head gaskets can pop too.

 

They actually did a 1.0 version of this engine in some markets. I can only imagine the horror

The 1.4 MPI has more torque from lower RPM than the 1.4 16V engines.

 

You could modify it to a fast road spec. by gasflowing the cylinder head and fitting a different cam then having it remapped on a rolling road but it would cost about €1000 for another 15 bhp.

 

You do the math.

My bad, i meant aftermarket, the filter is oem

I plan on buying a new car but right now a house is in the plan, i can't stand living in an apartment anymore, and i'll be just as far from work, houses in the city aren't for medium wage people like me.

The car might be an electric if in a few years they'll get cheaper and have more range which seems like it. Those will check a lot of marks feom my list. Until then I'll either buy a smaller car like a Swift 1.4 turbo, hyundai i20, something with low fuel consumption, i've read about a few models that also aren't slow and petrol thirsty like my fabia or just endure using it 2-3 years longer
