We need another car and we're floundering (Saab 93 TTiD is a big contender but we're looking at other marques too)..

 

The requirements are:

£3k budget, firm.

50+mpg (so diesel)

Reliable, as few mechanical quirks as possible.

Decent performance (not blistering but quick enough to be fun)

 

It's for my partner to use for work.. we'll keep up with maintenance but it's not going to have an easy life (she's a security guard on building sites, pretty much - it'll get driven, daily, on haul roads all year round)

 

Any suggestions?
