Is my 2.0tsi engine no more!!!!!

Featured Replies

I don’t know if anyone can answer this without looking in the engine.

I went to start my car the other day, it struggled to start at first, then it fired up but was really rough so I turned it off as soon as I heard how rough it was and haven’t touched it since. Plugged an obd2 in to see if any error codes popped up. The code in the pending error codes was p0016.
I’m guessing that the chain has either failed or a major slip has happened.

what are your thoughts

No one will be able to say for sure without inspecting!

However, that camshaft correlation error is not a good sign corresponding with a rough running and showing at cold start. Presumably you never had the timing chain and tensioner changed out to latest revisions?  If it is the timing chain slipped, you could be a lucky one without damage or just some valve damage. Or it could be toast..

I would not start again, more damage could ensue.

If you a mechanically experienced or wish to diy it, then you will need to engage in some careful diagnosis that does not cause further damage (assuming the engine can be recovered).

If you want to "see if the timing chain tensioner has completely let go, with the engine off, you could remove the upper timing chain cover and check for loose or flapping chain.

But what next. Probably best is to take it to someone who has the capability of doing the inspection, diagnosis and a repair at a reasonable price. I would add to that that they would need to have experience on this engine.  The engine intake / valves and variable timing are not for the feint hearted

Yes, well good luck and fingers crossed.

What year is your car? Tensioner was mainly a problem from 2009-2012. Have a look on YouTube for 'four rings auto' which shows several videos of strip down of the timing area, mainly Audi's but there is one of a Mk6 GTi (same car). Try to get your car recovered to a VAG specialist.

My car is 2011.

I can do most things on a car but when it involves timing and internals of engine I take it to someone who has more experience.

I live in Cornwall so I don’t kno where the nearest VAG specialist is.

My car lives, I must be the luckiest person. The chain jumped 3 teeth. No damage just put on new chain and running sweet as a nut.
