New Fabia Purchase - Common fautls?

Featured Replies

Hi all,
I am now the proud owner of a mk1 Skoda Fabia 2006 classic with the 1.2 HTP 6v engine.

I have a few questions about the car and engine as I have not owned one of these models / engines before.

First of all I am wondering about fuel economy - is 30 mpg good for careful round town driving? I am not really going hard on it and doesn't seem to change no matter how I drive, on the motorway at 65mph I get about 37 mpg. I read online I should be getting about 50?
I scanned the car and these fault codes were stored:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 01: Engine       Labels: Redir Fail!
   Controller: 03D 906 023 B
   Component: SIMOS91 1.2l 2V     1413
   Coding: 0000071
   Shop #: WSC 13765
   VCID: 1D4D5A7784A9
3 Faults Found:
16555 -  Fuel Trim; Bank 1: System Too Lean
            P0171 - 006 -  Short to Plus
16726 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40):
            P0342 - 009 - Signal Low - Intermittent
16514 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1:
            P0130 - 009 - Malfunction in Circuit - Intermittent
Readiness: N/A

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next is when the engine is idling, it seems to 'hunt about' for the idle rpm. Usually between 800 and 1100 rpm over about 3 seconds repeating until I set off then when I stop again it may or may not do it.

This might be normal but just thought I'd check.

Finally is the interior, none of the front windows work. I haven't had a look but was told the actual door motors work but it is just an electrical fault. Is this common / sound like an easy fix?

Thanks all for any help,

Ethan

50mpg is not going to happen as a fill-to-fill calculated average, be happy if you get over 40.

The claimed economy of the 3-cylinder engines is well above reality.

For the lean error code, and maybe the oxygen sensor one, you need to carefully inspect pipework at the back of the engine head for leaks. The brake servo vacuum hose and the output hose of the PCV valve are hot favourites. Photos tomorrow if no-one beats me to it. Idle wandering is very likely being caused by this.

Cam sensor code may be the sensor itself, a neighbour with the same engine, same fault code in a Polo has just this week got rid of the fault light with a sensor replacement. I won't be certain it's really fixed for a week or three of fault free running though.

Window motors on the later mk1s can be pretty flaky, lots of threads on here about them. You'll be lucky if it's a cheap easy fix.

Hi, thanks for that.

Had a look on the mot and at some point it did have a major leak of exhaust gas at the front so maybe that was the cause?

It also had a dead battery so do you think that could be camshaft signal error?

As for windows I will have a look and see what I can do. Sounds like it wont be an easy one though haha

Exhaust leak would probably have been the flexi section of the front part, beyond both oxygen sensors, so unlikely to be relevant.

Dead batteries can cause fault codes fairly randomly, clear the codes and see what returns. Check that your battery light illuminates at ignition on, and goes out after engine start.

Photo of a very badly deteriorated brake servo hose, check especially the underside/unsighted sides with fingertips or phone camera:

Photos of a very leaky PCV output hose (from above to orientate you, then below showing the hole in the rubber plastic-to-steel pipe joining section):

Both faults probably rather common, especially the servo hose one.
