I bought a new motherboard, CPU and memory and rebuilt it myself.   Then installed from the Media Creation Tool and it works fine. No files or data was lost.

Had to do it as my old CPU was a generation 6 which is not supported by Windoze 11. Even my Microsoft Surface laptop is not supported.

I wouldn't know where to start doing something like that. I'll probably treat myself to a new laptop next year with Windows 11 already on board.

  • I've waited until now to reply to see if my maps would update after running the car for some time. The answer is NO and I did do everything correctly. As for mountains and molehills, I don't thin

  • I don't think so, not yet at least - if ever. There was chatter here that Skoda is going to revert to self downloading maps via the Portal (I really hope they do !), so I asked the question via the on

  • When I dow nloaded only had the option of 2022, but noticed today they are both there, who knows what VW /Skoda are thinkin😉

Only cost me $300 and an hour to do it.  If you dont need it its hardly any different and I certainly wouldnt buy a whole computer just to have it

I'll have to have a test drive in a shop before buying then.

Well I've had the flash drive in the car for over a week now and although no single journey has lasted more than 30mins, overall the car has been driven plenty long enough for the map data to transfer.

Not a thing has happened and I'm getting really annoyed with this Skoda system - why is it so damned complicated ??

Was driving the car just now and the screen informed me there were updates available, but I had to wait until the car wasn't moving. Thinking this might be OTA map updates, I gave it the okay when I'd stopped. No maps though, just minor stuff !!

Sorry to hear updating hasn't worked for you I'm at a loss to explain why mine did and yours didn't, unless it was a corrupt download or corrupt unzipping or vehicle just not driven long enough etc etc...who knows, but for sure this is a VW / Skoda failure

I'll give it another day or two, then I'll delete data from the flash drive and try again.

Another thing to try; I have  up to date map data on another flash drive that I downloaded from the VW site for my wifes car. The file for that has the same name as the Skoda one I downloaded, so I assume it's the same. I think I'll plug that into my car and see what happens and the VW instructions don't state that the file needs to be unzipped.

Sounds like your Carnet is working if it did that. J have no more to offer than to say in 10 years of updating VW maps manually they have always had to be unzipped or they wont work .    What model VW is your wifes, and what is the suffix on the file you downloaded fot it ,  TAR.  Z7  or what

I did two updates on my previous Kodiaq with MIB2, both of which worked without unzipping. I've never unzipped a file in my life until last week.

My wife has a Mk 8 Golf with the Discover Pro infotainment system. I haven't tried updating the maps in her car yet (although I have them ready) because she's not well at present, so her car isn't getting driven.

This is what the download looks like on my laptop.   EUR_6PR053_FCT3WS_201H0_Offline_Update

This file is not zipped.

Post a screenshot of whats on your computer when  you click on the file name.

As for the Kodiaq if you downloaded direct to an SD card with the equiv of Discover Pro it would automatically unzip it to the card as thats what its for. If you download the offline file to a computer it normally has to be UNZIPPED onto the SD card

This is our downloaded file AUS_6PR053_CT3WS_201H0-OFFLINE_UPDATE and is a TAR file that is zipped .

When its unzipped this is what it like  and it wont work if thats not whats on the USB stick

Yep, that's exactly what mine looked like except there were loads more files.

Reloaded them onto flash drive today and stuck it in the car. All the files showed up on the screen in the media section and they also transferred themselves onto the other flash drive I had plugged in the car with all of my music on it, so my music disappeared..

My laptop keeps throwing up boxes with messsages telling me I can't do this and I can't do that, so what on earth is happening, I don't know.

I've wiped and reformatted my flashdrives, put my music back on one and the map files on another using a slightly different method. I'll try the maps in the car tomorrow and if it doesn't work, I'll probably give up and either hope I get an OTA update or I'll get my dealer to have a go.

I'm no computer whizz, but updating maps just shouldn't be this difficult, especially as I've followed the instructions and it has worked for me when I had the Kodiaq.

Thanks for trying to help me Exkiwi, but I just don't have the skills and knowledge to follow all you write and doing it remotely makes it worse.

Yesterday I went for a 1.5 hour non stop drive with a flash drive plugged in on which was loaded the unzipped map data file. They showed up on the flash drive as separate files just as Exkiwi showed above and I was 99% sure I'd got them there in the correct fashion. Nothing had changed when I got home, so I questioned whether I'd done it all correctly. I know that I have MIB3 as opposed to MIB2 in my previous Kodiaq, but my experience with the Kodiaq was that maps took less that an hour to download. Even Bryfly did it in 45 mins in his Kamiq. So, was I doing something wrong ?

Last night I went through the whole sequence again of downloading from the Portal and then onto the flash drive and I took extra care to make sure I did it correctly and I even unzipped the file directly to the flash drive, thereby cuuting out the copy and paste sequence. I now have this flash drive plugged into the car and I'm hoping for a miracle 😏.

I noticed  yesterday when I plugged in the flash drive and also today with the latest one, that if I went to the Media page in the infotainment screen and clicked on the Kingston flash drive that was plugged in, all of the unzipped files were there in the same format the Exkiwi showed above on his computer.

My question is; is that normal or are the files being read by the wrong part of MIB3 ????

Hi, just put my usb into my car and checked and the files show up under media,  as per pics below, I'm at a bit of a loss as to why it will not update in your vehicle, I guess you formatted usb key with exFAT first...

Yes, certainly did, I did everything right this time.

Do those files remain in your media page when you've unplugged your flash drive, or have you left it plugged in ?

Seeing them in your infotainment system gives me a slight hope that eventually my system will read them.

Sorry to be thick. When you say key, do you mean the car key or the flash drive ? If you mean the flash drive and those files disappear when you remove it, does the infotainment system retain the updated map version ?

Mean the flash drive key and yes Map update is retained by infotainment system

Many thanks. I've just been applying some polish and aqueous repellent to the car for about an hour and I had the engine running whilst I did it, but no map upgrade yet.

Just a thought, from the instructions I'm wondering two things, does the USB Flash disc have to go into a particular connector of the two in the front and secondly does the vehicle have to be driven taken from below.

Insert the USB Flash Disc into the proper connector in the front part of the car. The vehicle uses the data on the USB disc while driving  to  update the required map regions. For proper updating, we recommend  to  leave the USB Flash Disc plugged into the vehicle connector each time you drive.

I'm pretty sure that means either one of the two in front of the gear lever  and NOT the one that might be fitted beside the rear view mirror. I can plug my music into either of the gear lever sockets and both will read it.

I have wondered whether I have my infotainment settings as they should be, but I can't think or see what I'd change for the unit to read the files.

It would appear that the same files we've downloaded for our Skodas will work in a VW as well, so I'm keen to try my download in my wifes Golf. Trouble is, she's not well so she isn't driving it and I'm not driving her car cos I want to get mine sorted out first as my mapping is older than hers.

I find it difficult to comprehend that Skoda have got it so wrong and there's nobody that the man in the street i.e. me,  can ask to get a definitive answer about how to do it.

I saw earlier that you contributed to another thread on this subject in the Kodiaq section. There are currently 6 pages of posts there and still no definitive answer !!

Assuming that Covid doesn't throw us a curved ball, we've booked to drive to France next May - I think I'll take my old Garmin which I've just updated with no bother at all 👍.

Just stick the thing in the front one and dont bother doing anything else and wait. No need to bring it up on the screen,as that may upset it.

Told you how to do it all really and its not hard as thousands seem do it without troubles.  You seem to be making a mountain  out of a very small molehill

I've waited until now to reply to see if my maps would update after running the car for some time. The answer is NO and I did do everything correctly.

As for mountains and molehills, I don't think so as VAG has really complicated by making things work in different ways in different countries and also different models of Skoda in the same country, even though they have an MIB3 system.

I am told once again today by the Skoda UK online chat line that mapping updates can only be done in a Kamiq via OTA in the UK. This was also backed up by my dealer and to do this we have to be signed up to Skoda Connect and also be logged into the infotainment system as the Primary User. Once this is done, updates will not necessarily be immediate and they will be dependent on when they are released by Skoda.

I told my dealer that Bryfly had managed to do it, but I'd only realised today that he has a Karoq, not a Kamiq. The dealer said that although different models may have the  MIB3 system, some have an imbedded SD card (not to be confused with an embedded e sim). A manual update will work in car that has an embedded SD card, but not in a car without one e.g. the Kamiq.

I cannot speak for other countries, except to say that I already knew that parameters differed between countries, which I pointed out before, so I have to assume that you in OZ have an SD card in the Kamiq, or maybe it's to do with your mapping being much smaller.

Anyway, it would appear that I wasn't logged in as the primary user in my car, which is probably why I've received no updates. I've now rectified that and already I've been allowed access to the shop and have made a free purchase of Traffication, so hopefully, mapping updates will follow in the fullness of time.

Once again mentioning mountains and molehills, I think it's a bloody poor show that VAG not only makes it complicated to do these things, but they don't give us enough info to make updates (in this case) easy to to do and understand. And don't forget Exkiwi, not everybody on the planet who buys a new car has your knowledge of computers, so what might come easy to you doesn't to them.

As for implying I'm thick, I did everything correctly following the Portal instructions, plus those from you and Bryfly. There just wasn't any info available to tell me that these instructions wouldn't work in a UK Kamiq.

A poor show on their part I think and this is echoed by many other owners here in the UK.

.

Tend to agree, if you wanted to make anything complicated the VW group certainly know how, I was also told that the maps would update OTA when I picked up my Karoq from the dealer, then after several months of nothing it became available as a download on the portal with the instructions on how to do it, so maybe the Kamiq will go the same way eventually, I must admit with how long it took to download on my PC I could never see how it was going to download sensibly via a built in sim card...
