Updating the navigation maps ?

Featured Replies

Anyone done a map update yet ?
I've downloaded the maps from the Skoda portal and transferred them to a flash drive. I then plugged the flash drive into one of the USB C ports in the car.  The system knows it's there but it wouldn't let me transfer the maps to the infotainment system.
I've managed it successfully in my previous Kodiaq, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong in the Kamiq - any ideas please.

  • I've waited until now to reply to see if my maps would update after running the car for some time. The answer is NO and I did do everything correctly. As for mountains and molehills, I don't thin

  • I don't think so, not yet at least - if ever. There was chatter here that Skoda is going to revert to self downloading maps via the Portal (I really hope they do !), so I asked the question via the on

  • When I dow nloaded only had the option of 2022, but noticed today they are both there, who knows what VW /Skoda are thinkin😉

A couple of snippets I've read made me wonder if that's the case, however I've also read that updates are free for life.

Also, why does the Skoda portal and also the VW one, (I'm having the same problem with my wifes Golf) let me input our VIN numbers and download the maps with no mention that it can't actually be done this way. I'm finding it all rather strange.

Also, signing up to Skoda connect doesn't give you internet access, so how do updates download ?

I shall be speaking to the dealer tomorrow as my Kamiq maps are 2 years old !

Well skoda1982 is correct, but I have to say that Skoda are simply becoming less clever.

I spoke to the salesman who sold me the car today and whilst he had a glimmer of how it works, he didn't know the full story. I therefore had an online chat with Skoda and the guy there was helpful.

You have to register with Skoda Connect which is free for the first year and payable thereafter. I was already registered from my previous car, although I'd let it lapse, so I reactivated it on my phone and added the Kamiq to it. I then had to take the phone and both sets of keys out to the car to pair the info in the phone to the car following the instructions from the infotainment system.

That was last night and this morning the mapping hadn't updated, which is when I tried the dealer and Skoda chat. Chat line recommended a factory reset and if that didn't work take it to a dealer.

I did the reset, during which I lost my phone connection and all the contacts and the Connect pairing, plus myself as primary user which I'd set up last night.

It took me a long time to get Connect back and reregister myself as primary user, but I got there in there end, except my phone contacts are still in the ether and as yet, maps aren't updating.

I'll leave it for a while now as when I bought the car and paired my phone, it took quite a while for my contacts to migrate, if it doesn't work I'll be taking the car to the dealer.

I don't know how the car gets a connection to be able to to perform auto updates - I assume an embedded sim or a satellite connection.

It shouls have it's own internet access.

If you do manage to update it, let us know how.

As a side note, are you able to lock or unlock the car from the My Skoda app?

Just from the initial registration, no you can't. You have to take your driving licence along to your dealer to have it confirmed that you are who you claim to be.

I've stated how to update it, just register with Skoda connect on the app, pair with your car and updates will be automatic as long as your infotainment system is working as it should be.

Alright, my bad.

I gave the local Skoda dealer my Driver's License and it still doesn't work.

They said afterwards that it doesn't work on the Scala and Kamiq, but the Skoda Website says it does, therefore I'm slightly unsure about it.

Can't help with that I'm afraid as I haven't registered with the dealer and I certainly don't need to open my car remotely. I'd certainly take much of what you read on the Skoda website with a pinch of salt. They led me to believe that I could update my maps in the same way I did it in my Kodiaq, but it's not possible.

Alright mate, one more question, maybe you know?

Is it worth setting a primary user or should I just go with the guest that was premade?

I set mine to primary user because I am the primary user, it's easy to do and I assume (probably mistakenly) that signing on as the primary user might afford me/us more privileges.

You're maps download automatically when they are due they don't backdate so the next  maps are around November. You will still get software updates. It's not just to open your doors remotely it let's you know if your alarm has been activated

If you do a factory reset you lose everything only reset if you are selling or something seriously wrong

Some good stuff here from skoda1982, thankyou. That's stopped me fretting about why my system isn't updating.

Having said that , why is my system so far behind at Nov 2019 ?

I'll set the Primary User right away!

Maybe that's why I cant lock or unlock the car?

Can I ask where you get your info from ? I'm normally quite good at research online, but I've found very little that's useful or easy to understand and my dealer and the online chat fellow certainly didn't know what you stated above about the frequency of updates.

Regarding my locking and unlocking, if anybody needs this info...

I called Skoda Czech Helpline and together with the very nice customer support guy we determinrd that my dealer doesn't know what he's talking about and they failed to verify my account...

They told me to go back to the dealer and if they can't fix it, Skoda CZ will,).

Good result then. Yours is not the only dealer who doesn't know what they're talking about. It very often depends on you getting to speak to the right guy e.g. the anorak who knows all the little things.

I knew that's the case when using the Skoda Portal, but it's somewhat annoying having to wait until November to see if my efforts will be rewarded.

You can download the map data from https://updateportal.skoda-auto.com/en-GB
  (needs your VIN) u
nzip it and pur it onto a USB-C memory stick.
put the stick into a USB socket and do menu > settings > system information > update software.

the data from the USB stick will gradually get copied to the hard disk (mib 3)

The VW site seens to have more up-to-date mapping (MIB3 seeems to = Discover Plus) - don't know if you should cross brands on this.

as for me, I still cannot set primary user (contact custome services) - perhaps I need to use a dealer with a guy with a thicker anorak.

That's the way I used to do it in my Kodiaq, but unless you know something I don't, it doesn't work as I've already tried it.

I now have this sorted, partly due to the info skoda1982 gave, internet research and several phone calls.

For a while now VAG have been fitting e sims embedded into certain cars. The Kamiq has it, as does my wifes Golf Mk8 and many others in the group as well.

This means that updates, including maps, will come to your car automatically. Ordinary updates can appear at any time on screen and will ask if you want them to be downloaded. I'm not sure if mapping does the same i.e. asking if you want to download, or if it does it quietly in the background - I'll hopefully find out in November as map updates are only issued twice a year as already mentioned.

To receive these updates, you must have registered with Skoda Connect (or VW We Connect in my wifes case).

There's many instructions to be found online for downloading maps, but if they're the same as peterhr outlines above, then certainly if you have a Kamiq, those instructions are outdated and won't work.

If you're not sure whether your car has an e sim and if your dealer doesn't know, then search online, that's how I found out about the Golf.

From experience, don't rely on info from front of house staff at the dealership, ask to speak to the head tech in the workshop as they tend to be/should be better informed.

Hey,

It seems odd that you can only get map updates twice a year.

What if you don't drive the car during that month?

You are sure about it?

If that's truly the case, I find it a very flawed design.
