rear brakes has started to sqeak

hey guys

 

hope everyone is ok.

 

i have changed my drum brakes around april 2019, the driver rear brakes have started to  sqeak so i am guessing it will need changing again.

 

right now i only have 50 pound and the one i bought before was around 50 but it has gone up 70 pound now.

i forgot about the backing plate, it might just need greasing.

Just because they are squeaking doesn't mean they are shot. They usually last 100,000 miles or more.

 

Take the drums off, give them a through cleaning out, first with a brush to remove the dust (take appropriate precautions), then some Brake cleaner and kitchen roll. Use some 60 or 80 grit paper to remove the glaze on the shoe friction surface and rough up the mating surfaces on the drums inside. Its this that causes the squealing.

when you say rough up the inside of the drums, do you mean sand it down slightly?

Just make sure they are not shiny, a bit of roughness is required for optimum braking and reduce squealing.

Most common issues with rear brake squeak/squeal are dust in the drums, no grease on backplate where shoes rest, weak hold down springs and weak return springs, these should be replaced when changing the shoes, just a note Bosch do a set of shoes for the Fabia and they are around £25 a set but are bonded shoes not riveted as original but just as good for wear

i will take it all aprt tomorrow and have a proper clean.

another thing is when i press the brake pedal, it seem to have gone down further than before. not sure if i am imagining it though but it felt higher before.

Check the operation of the self adjusters (wedges). Also, when you changed them last time, you might not have got the shoes in the perfect central position (too far up or down). Check.

 

Back off the adjustment wedges before removing the drums (otherwise you have difficulty removing the drums....I presume you know how to do this, there is a picture guide on Briskoda if you don't.....)

 

Back them off completely before refitting the drums, (handbrake off). First thing is to operate the footbrake, after a few applications, press down hard on the footbrake a few times. Then pull up the handbrake  several times, increasingly harder. Repeat until everything seem right, should have centralised the shoes and adjusted the wedges correctly.

Spray on Autoglym Magma at the car wash, while queuing, then get blasted with water jet on all wheels, works a treat, as I have green wheels I can see there is loads of dust from the pads

just an update:

 

drove my car quite abit tonight and the squeak has got alot quieter now. quite faint.

If unused, brakes can get covered in a light amount of what looks like rust. A decent drive should remove most of this but rear drums do tend to need a little TLC now and then to operate nicely. Brake squeal is a PITA but at least you can hear the brakes when you press the pedal so know they are operating. Its when you hear nothing and nothing happens, you are up a certain creek, without the necessary rowing implement! Also, be aware of scraping, rather then squealing as that may indicate the pads/shoes have worn to their lower limit. Best avoided if possible, to prevent additional wear to the discs/drums in question.

 

My guess is your drums are just grubby and not worn, unless of course, you over tightened the adjusters and the brakes were continually binding. I think you need to tighten them up until contact is made, then loosen off by a set amount so worth checking properly.

The drums are self adjusting. Do not adjust via the handbrake aduster in the centre console. Once your shoes are self adjusted correctly, you can tweak the handbrake adjuster so you have more or less clicks to full on. Mine is set at 6 clicks, dealers like to convince you that it needs to be at 2 clicks (for which they want £30 or more for a 2 minute job), but that means the brakes will probably drag and be prone to the stuck on after parked syndrome.
