P0401 EGR Valve code, Also Air Con fault

Featured Replies

Hi All,

P0401 : EGR Valve - Insufficient Flow

I keep getting this code. I have cleaned out the EGR valve, and the valve piston moves and returns when pushed with a small screwdriver, so its not jammed. Presume the fault is electrical / data error?

Will Vag Com be able to test the valve for correct operation before I pay

Also' date=' my air con doesnt work when the weather is too warm (rather defeats the object), but works fine on cooler days. I have had it re-gassed.

Would Vag Com be able to diagnose or recode this problem?[/quote']

If it's the same as mine, expect:

Address 8 One fault found 00818 sensor for evaporater outlet temp (G263)

30-10 Open or short to B+

Couldn't be recoded as it was a faulty sensor :(

p0401 EGR valve -insufficient flow

I had this on mine ,the same car 2000(Yreg) 1.4-16v, the previous owner took it to various garages, who only reseted the CEL light (after 10 miles or so light back on) and even 2 previous MOT sertificates had a note in it CEL on... I bought my own scanner tool, connected it, and the above mentioned message appeared, i took off the EGR valve, the pipes that lead to inlet manifold, cleaned with carb cleaner, anyway the EGR valve was working, then I took off the'' throttle body'' or anyway you call it- the thingy that is just under the air filter housing with a butterfly valve in it and a plug wire connector and sits on 4 allen screws and to my surprise the inside was covered in carbon residue and in the centre there was a thing that looked like a ''black mushroom'' I cleaned that bit through with a wire, gave it a wash with carb spray, appears to be the part that ''injects'' the exhaust gasses into the manifold, clean it looks like a pen with 2 holes on top both sides. then I put it all back together, deleted the code, started the car, it shot out a blue smoke at a second or two, and all is well... Now about 2 months later I can approve it worked for me!!!

So don't rush to buy a new EGR when the code appears, just try to clean that ''injecting'' part first.

Hope this helps to anyone!

Another possible reason for this code would be a glitch in the ECU software. Would help to see an Auto-Scan from the vehicle(s) in question.
