My engine check light is on . This car has no service history.  Can anyone tell me common causes of this and or back door ways off turning it of .

A cheap code reader will tell you the codes and allow you to turn off the light. Engine light is often lambda probe faults.

It might be worth mentioning that occasionally Aldi ( and sometimes ) Lidl have readers on sale at low prices. I'll leave passing judgement on how good these readers are to those that use them on a regular basis.

Lee- out of curiosity -where is the port on the MK1?

Ken- of course you could "suddenly " have this light come on and call out your breakdown( if you are a member), but on the last car, they had no way to reset it.

If I remember correctly the  port is in the little compartment low down to the right of the steering wheel or in the fuse box covered by a panel on the rhs of the dash covered by the drivers door .

Inside the driver's cubby box. Pull the compartment right down past its normal stop....
