2014 Elegance 1.8 AC not cooling when hot

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I have a 2014 black mk3 Octavia 1.8 and I recently had the evaporator changed to a new one cause there was a big leak.

Right now its much better, but there is a huge difference between when the car was hot or not.

Especially if it had direct sunlight or not.

with car parked in the garage, AC temp inside the vent is about 8c, in the night it can get to 5c, but if I parked it in the sun and the dashboard is flaming hot, it won't go lower than 15(!!!)c which is terrible cause its when I needed the AC the most. Even after a 20 minutes drive it stays like that.

Is it normal? I returned to the dealer and first time they made a software update, second time the measured temprature was 8 cause it was early morning so they didn't do anything.

Thanks 🙏

I recently got mine regassed, it held a vacuum so it was just slight amounts over time.

The other option is to check the AC profile is on strong. Press and hold the setup button until the setup comes up on display.

After that check/change the temperature or sunlight sensors?

They did the regas and vaccum when they changed the evaporator.

Profile was on medium, intresting, I will do further testing.

What do you mean by that last sentence?

When it’s hot hot you’ll want strong not medium, but as the weather cools you’ll find it almost headache inducing and will want to get back to medium.

Last comment was around the fact that there are sensors for cabin temperature and also there was (at least in older cars) a sensor in the dash to let the car know it was in direct sunlight. If either of these are reading incorrectly you’ll have issues.

Yeah smell was terrible with the profile on strong.

What and how can I check/check in those sensors?

VCDS or a Garage/dealer with the correct tools.

If the smell is terrible on strong, gave you ever changed the pollen filer?

It was changed almost two years ago.

I assume they would have changed it if needed while they replaced the evaporator?

I'm tired of going to the dealer, especially cause I'm not sure I have something to complain about, I mean its not cooling(15c in the vent) when the dashboard is untouchably hot, in a normal daytime drive it blows about 11-12c.

Temps here are about 33c.

Pollen filters regularly get ignored and are often a chargeable extra.

If they don’t get changed they can block up reducing airflow which can allow for bacterial growth. They also start to smell after too long.

Suggestion would be to change it and set off an AC cleaner can. There are details of how to DIY if you wish (quick search should reveal it) and the hardest bit is getting the glovebox clip back on.

Worth doing if you can’t see it definitely has been done in the last 12 months. Even if it does little for AC temperature it will at least be new and the cleaner should deal with the smells.
