Temperature inside an airbox

Featured Replies

mainly talking about the mk1 petrol cars but I guess it'd apply equally to others.

Wondering if anyone knows, or has a rough idea, of temperatures reached inside the airbox of a petrol car.

At running temps..

When cruising on the open road

Sat idling for 15mins (after being thoroughly warmed up)

Or, failing that, is there a (rough) temperature when power really starts to be affected?

Are you getting cold feet about that cone air filter you fitted? 😋

Just kidding. What were the readings on that wireless temp gauge you put in the airflow?

Not at all.. I think there's enough people like RTech have supplied, fitted and advocated them that they can't be all that bad.. although I am, historically, very anti-cone (not even panel filters get a look in usually, I've only ever had 1 car that has benefitted from one).

Ok, hardly scientific..

On a warm day, normal driving, not sat in traffic, then sat idling outside the house for a few minutes, the thermometer thingy indicated 32 degrees and was climbing quite steadily.

Can't remember if I posted in my thread about fitting the gold reflective tape.. but I did that..  and then..

On a cooler day, a little A-road traffic, after a very spirited drive and sat outside idling for a few minutes, we had 27.5 degrees and slowly climbing.

With nothing to compare it to I don't know whether that's good, bad or ugly.. doesn't seem much noisier with the cone though.. which is ok, my neighbours appreciate it, I'm sure.

Black OEM Air filter boxes like some cars have sitting at the back corner of an engine compartment can get very hot inside.

Dark Bonnet closed and sitting in traffic with sun beating down, or before or after a Sprint or Run up a 1/4 mile.

Many ways to get intake temps, OBD etc,  i use the simplest,  a £1.99 Digital Fridge Thermometer works.

That is good for reading Cold Air Intake temps, engine compartment temps and many other things like, tyres, brake discs or  a passengers temp.

I have used them in a dipstick tube to check oil temp.

I have a thermometer (fat white pill thing in the pic) dangling in what I think is possibly the hottest part.. it links to my phone via an app and I can dynamically monitor the temperature (and make charts too, if I can work out how).

I was hoping to find out the difference, with regard to temperature, between OE and what I have now - should have planned it better and I'd have known..

That's a good result for such a simple mod with the gold tape.

I can't remember, but have you also lagged the exhaust manifold?

I'm now wondering if the OEM air intake could be improved with some insulation.

What result, 32° on a warm day,  27.5° and climbing on a cooler day?

Maybe 2 degrees cooler and driven a lot harder.

It's just non scientific comparisons for my own amusement.

Pick it apart for your own if you must
