This is the most powerful car I have ever owned or even driven in 48 years of driving so I don’t feel the need for any more power. It gets to the speed limit in very few seconds!

I've had a licence for a year longer than you and I've felt the need for more power in everything I've ever driven and most of the things I've ridden.  Although a friend's Lamborghini Gallardo is probably the car exception.....😁

Embarassingly avoiding the last 2 messages on performance cars, I've had a couple of weeks using Autohold on my 1.0 DSG, after 2 previous years as an ignorant Autolhold sceptic.   I'm now leaving it on most of the time - agree with Kenny R it's great with the DSG and does make starting from standstill easier on the right foot and it's generally a bit less effort to achieve a smooth take off.  I've tried some moderately fast getaways turning right from a side road into a busy main road and no wheel spin or tramping so far, but too early to say for sure.  I've still to try really putting my foot down while in Sport from standstill.  If not for the rather-oversensitive-to-small-movement-at-top-of-throttle-pedal, it would be as good as my torquey old Saab 9-5 2 litre auto & is already nicer here than my previous Yeti 1.2 DSG (and as it happens my older BMW E39 523i auto too - always seemed a bit sluggish in spite of the good 0-60 times, unless I really used the throttle).

 

What I didn't like on first getting the Karoq & before I was used to it, was using Autohold with Stop/start.  Initially pressing go, the engine would start with a slight jolt + taking off in Autohold I tended to do too suddenly.  That put me off using both facilities for far too long, but that was before I learned the trick of twitching the steering wheel - anticipating moving off a few seconds later.  Still only use Stop/start occasionally, when a longish wait expected, replacement EFB batteries aren't cheap.

 

Going back to a point made by RootToot, stopped in traffic today, I did notice from the red reflections in a white Transit behind me, that the rear brakes lights are illuminated when Autohold operates - need to think more about that, but reluctant to give up Autohold now.

If doing a standing start in S you might want to try then another time try with TC off.  The reason being that if there is wheel spin with TC on then power can be cut.  TC off and there might be wheelspin, grip and go.     Then winter / snow / ice and getting moving the owners manual tells you about TC off.  Same with snow chains fitted.       PS. If you want brake lights off then N and parking brake on.

RootToot, in due course I'll try turning off TC on a fast getaway.  Regarding your PS, that's what I had been doing sometimes, but too fiddly - almost as bad as driving a manual car and handbrake + out of gear at traffic lights!  Getting used to autohold is spoiling me.

 

Whilst writing, also can confirm that if braking gently & not pressing too hard on the pedal when stopped, doesn't trigger Autohold.

So you often need to check that the little green light has come on if you don't want to gently roll into the car in front - or behind.

 

If only we could have a sort of lever that you could raise to apply the handbrake, and release when it wasn't needed.

How simple would that be?  You could do it almost without thinking (and without constantly checking)

Like the Yeti had? A handbrake!

However if you applied the handbrake and then released the footbrake before putting into N or P first it sat there slipping the clutch and trying to move!!

I watched a curtesy driver from Skoda doing exactly that when giving us a lift whilst my Yeti was in for service - wouldn’t have wanted to buy that Octavia second hand!

Personally I find the Karoq auto hold works perfectly and is a huge improvement to former Yeti, whilst it is easily disengaged when needed, so that it then works like the Yeti did and allows the car to start to move on brake release without applying any throttle. I often do that when in very slow traffic combined with selecting manual 1st gear so it doesn’t immediately select second when moving (and then goes too fast at engine idle speed for the queue movement)

Yes, there's a kind of 'biting point' when autohold kicks in.

I think autohold is brilliant for a rapid 3-point turn.

I'm not about to turn it on, turn it off - massive chance I'll forget where I left it.

Generally, I think I'd rather have an old fashioned handbrake.

Maybe my motto should be:   "Proud to be boring "
