iOS 15 not connecting to CarPlay “field to connect iPhone 13”

Featured Replies

Hello every one

for two days I am trying to connect my iPhone 13 with the new (iOS 15) to my Skoda Scala (2021 ambition) with original apple usb c to lightning cable.

I tried every thing that suggested on Appels and Skodas websites (like: forget the device, screen time settings, Siri settings) and nothing of it helped.

does someone had the same problem and can help me ?

Hi, I've a similar problem.  Mk3 Octavia 2018 Amundson infotainment.  CarPay used to work fine, USB connected.  Since I think 15, Siri only partly works (I dont use maps through the phone).  HeySiri causes the globe/orb to appear, and it responds to the request to text someone by showing that contact screen and asking what I want to say, but then it wont take the dictation of the txt.  Same problem with both iPhones in the family, completely reset everything on car and phone, but no difference.  Apple say it is a Skoda update responsibility, nothing on the Update Portal.  Apple are staying in touch with me to see how I get on with Skoda, but I dont know where where to start contacting Skoda.  Any ideas anyone?

Hi, I tryed every thing to solve this problem (to switch cables, update skoda software, update iOS )

after a week or two I took my skoda to the service, they told me that this is common problem, did a fast reset by pressing something under the hood and in 5 minutes the CarPlay worked well but in my case I had problems with connecting the iPhone and didn’t had any after I succeed to connect him.
before going to the service try to reset completely the skoda system by pressing and holding the on/off button

I hope this will help you

Hello Markjur, thank you for your reply and apologies I did not reply sooner, I was waiting for a time when things looked like they could resolve.

I summary at this stage, Apple engineers are working on it and it will get fixed in an iOS update.  The detailed problem has been focused down to the in-car microphone switching off before detailed instructions can be issued to Siri, or for voice during a phone-call.

Thank you for your suggestion above.  I checked with my local Skoda Independent (Quattro-tech Cambridge area they did a fantastic job of front sensors and rear camera for me previously).  They said it can only have been a battery disconnection to power everything down.  I tried that, and also your reset, but neither worked.  (BTW if others reading try this, you get loads of warnings, but they go after you have driven for 100metres).

Since then I have tried national Skoda.  They acknowledged some CarPlay issues with later iPhones but not my earlier model, and referred me to local Skoda to see if there was any Infotainment firmware update (independents cannot do it).  Skoda locally (Vindis Cambridge) never replied to my emails.  I went back to national Skoda, who also were unable to get Vindis to reply, so quite an achievement from that main dealer.  However they took responsibility at least and confirmed there wasn't a firmware update available (they could have done that at the start and saved me time but hey ho).  Anyway, back to Apple who have been great, but it has been time consuming.  Allocated a support person, and we have spoken 4-5 times, twice for nearly 2 hours, going through so much testing in the car, and because I can only speak once a fortnight, each time there was an iOS update I had to redo some.

Anyway 2 weeks ago they took detailed logs off the phone as I was demonstrating the faults, and those have gone to engineering.  The response has been that they are aware of the same problem will now be able using the logs to issue an iOS fix; it rather sounded like few others had been willing to get through the time-consuming testing and log generation except me.

So fingers crossed Apple carry on being great, and that I never need to go to Vindis (I had my first Octavia from them 20 years ago and they were much better than this, pity).

Best wishes all, and thanks again Markjur.

Hi Steve - did you get a resolution on this in the end?

Hi, well Apple issued the update last week, included in the lust of fixes was this CarPlay problem, but regrettably it hasn't worked.  I called Apple today to open the case again and I'll pick it up with the senior advisor again.  Fingers crossed for a second attempt.

CarPlay via USB has been connecting and working well using my iPhone 8 in my 2016 Yeti, recently.   I'm just downloading iOS 16.3.   Let's hope it doesn't break it.

OK, so it has been ages, but finally got to the bottom of the problem.

At some point during trying to resolve the iOS Siri problem, the "audio input" in the car also failed, but it took a while to realise (lesson, go back to the beginning on fault finding).  This failure was masked to some extent because it seems that even when connected to CarPlay, the iPhone itself will still handle the first "Hey Siri" and only then pass it to the car, which then didn't have audio input.

So what of the audio input failure?  Excellent service again from Quattrotech south of Cambridge.  They tried a different microphone, not that.  They tested the wiring between microphone and the 5F unit (in the glovebox, the business behind the Infotainment), and that had continuity so not that. They sent the 5F away for testing and it was fine (and the testers didn't charge 🙂 ).  So all the audio input bits worked separately, just not together. Kindly the 5F testers also sent pin by pin wiring diagrams so Quattrotech rightly ran a new wire direct from the 5F to the microphone, success.

Lessons: fault finding is complex, and I am hugely grateful for a specialist independent who was willing to work the problem and only charge for the final solution too.

Thanks to everyone who commented, and best wishes for 2024.
