Task manager-processes

Featured Replies

Hi all,

was wondering, when you bring up the task manager and click the processes tab. how many processes should be up there when say you have only 1 internet explorer page open and no other programs?

There should be quite a lot of processes running due to the operating system...

If there's any you're not sure about, google for the name (e.g. "svchost.exe") and you should find info on the process... and if it's harmless or not!

cool will try that mate :)

Wouldn't be out of the ordinary to have more than 40 or 50 processes running with no applications started!

Some will be obvious, you may find that Outlook & Winword are already running in the background even if the Apps aren't open. You will find multiple instances of svchost and something for all the apps running in your system tray.

Something to watch for though are processes that are hogging the CPU for long periods (except folding@home obviously ;) ) .

ok cool, it was just incase there are ones i shouldnt have is all :)

Kenny post a list of your running processes and I will happily pick out any that you dont need so you can stop them coming back. I hate software that sticks things in memory at start up just incase you might want to use it in a month or two.
