Look Ma....no wires! AAwireless box finally arrives

Featured Replies

Well, I'm one up on the MK4 Owners. Android Auto Wireless works for me! My wireless interface box finally arrived after waiting for it for 10 months!

For those of you wanting to do the same thing, it should work with Bolero, Amunsden and Columbus systems. The screen shot shows it working on my retrofitted Columbus system with MHI2_ER_SKG13_P4526 firmware. On Bolero and Amunsden it should work on SOP4.x hardware with 0478 and above.

Download the app onto Android. It works best with Android 10 and above. Connect it up, enable developer mode in AA, enable Wireless and connect up the device. You also need to enable the VAG crash settings to get it work in Wireless AA app. You also need to update the AAWireless box to version 1.71 (it won't work on version 1.60).

You need to wait 40 secs for connection and for any reboots. To get the best audio settings, go into AA settings and enable Auto Resolution and enable 48khz Audio Rate.

My opinion on this is, unless the wee box also doubled as a charging pad then this offers no advantages over the conventional plug in system.  Wireless AA with wireless charging, yep I can see the appeal. Wireless AA but no charging or still having to plug into charge? Don’t see the appeal there.

Wait 40s to connect? It's quicker to the plug the phone in and at least it's charging too 😜

Always interesting to see someone try something new and reach a successful outcome but I don't think this is one i'll be in a hurry to try and replicate in it's current form.

Do you have any plans to try and reroute the cabling and hide the box away? If not, i'd highly recommend 90 degree connector usb cables, they really tidy up having something plugged in.

It's a Linux box, so there is a small time whilst the box boots up. However that is usually only on first boot up. Subsequent boot ups are quicker.

You can retrofit wireless charging. There are several threads on Briskoda on how to do that for standard sized phones.

I'm not advocating but it is a nice retrofit which gives similar usage to the MK4 MIB3 systems. As to mounting, a small piece of velcro on the back will allow mounting on the passenger side.

That's one of the reasons I don't like wireless AA. My dad has it in his beamer and especially when you're using the maps or BBC sound streaming, it does take a noticeable chunk out the battery life.

I was on a 3 ish hour drive the other day. Phone plugged in, used google maps as the sat nav and my phone's in a 'use for the rest of the day' state when I unplugged it.

@varaderoguy Yeah, I can see it's advantage because it's a case of jump in the car and you don't have to faff about with wires. Only thing I would say may be a good investment would either be the charging pad, or at a push (and wouldn't look as great) is a phone cradle with a charging pad in the back of it.

I agree, the battery use is a bit savage; let me see how I get on with it.
