Stockpiles

Featured Replies

You read about how many cars have been built and then stockpiled ,due to lack of semi Conductors and maybe other parts.wondering if any one knows how many cars are standing awaiting these parts to complete the car build.it must run into thousands when you read things on here.

During October when the production lines stopped Škoda said they were planning to finish 10,000 cars that are sitting, so more than 10,000 then.

The story from Skoda CZ that they would have to stop stockpiling unfinished cars when it got to 55,000 and they would suspend building.   So they did suspend building and got on with finishing cars and delivering them and restarted building.   They need to get cars flogged and money in and not stock months old since first built and sitting over a winter.  A few years ago cars sat without WLTP certification.    Skoda are not a huge manufacturer anyway.  They said in the second half of 2021 they might only produce 50% less than normal.  So that is about 270,000 they will not build.

You can see the situation at the car/van handling ports around the UK, I use to be responsible for part of Portbury Docks, Bristol car import docks where about half a million cars and van are handled, nearly a square mile of storage, also worked at Immingham where much of the German and central/eastern cars come in.

Driving over the Avon bridge where one can get a good view of the car/van storage and processing areas I noted how empty the storage area was ie mostly white vans and very few cars, maybe hundreds instead of the many thousands.  VW and many of the European car producers will have a very poor year where as Chinese producers have faired much better, including SAIC-VW, see numbers below picture.....
