Rather strange sound coming from vents/heating system

Featured Replies

Dear users,

I hope I am not asking a question that has already been answered once on these forums, but I could not find any topics covering it. Perhaps due to the quirkiness of the sound, I haven't been able to find the right search keywords.

Anyway, the following:

This September we bought a second-hand Octavia MKIII (build in 2020). We are very happy with the car in general, but we noticed a weird sound coming from the vents, in particular when the engine is turned off or running very quietly. It's impossible to hear when driving the car, due the ambient sounds from outside.

I can best describe it as a sort of sound old printers used to make while printing (or perhaps a floppy disk drive sound). I tried recording it and uploading it to youtube, but it was quite hard to capture the sound without it being drowned out by air blowing. Hopefully you can hear it. See videos below. You might have to turn up your volume to be able to hear it. I made sure no sudden loud sounds are present in the videos, so you don't have to worry about ear damage. 😛 (Just make sure to turn the volume back down...).

It's a rather low sound, that comes and goes (with infrequent pauses of any) and can vary in volume as well. Do you have any idea what this might be? Is it supposed to make this sound?

Mine makes the same noise when the fan is on and it is not constantly there, it comes and goes away without any specific pattern! But, tbh I can hear it only when the engine is off and the fan is on! Maybe it is the router noise? Or could be the cooling system pump noise?

You are the first one to respond having a car with similar sounds! I suppose I am happy (?) I found someone who has a car with the same sounds. I posted the exact some question on a dutch skoda forum and no one seemed to know what it is...

tbf it is very difficult to hear it and I could notice it when I left the fan on randomly!

Hmmm, I don't find it difficult to hear at all. The moment the start/stop system kicks on it's quite noticable.
