Fitted winter tyres yesterday

Featured Replies

With weather forecast to get much colder at the weekend I have put my winter wheels on now.

This will be their fifth winter. Used 3 times on previous Yeti and second winter for Karoq.

I actually found out that although fine on Yeti they were not quite the correct width, but fortunately exactly correct for Karoq.

So much more comfortable to drive on 16” wheels though than standard 19”!!

I quite like the look of the black steel wheels on a black car?

I actually prefer those wheels to say flashy alloy ones on more sporty cars - would look even better with hub caps, just like recent London taxis, with maybe an old fashioned white band on the side walls.  Yes, very much a minority view here I confess, but generally don't see much point in alloys, they cost a lot & difficult to repair once bent.

I think they'd look even better with a coat of gloss black hammerite on em. You could get wheel ttrims if desired, but for ease of cleaning better left as is.

Croq does have a point, we fit expensive alloys that end up scuffed and can't weigh much less than steel wheels - they certainly feel heavy when changing them. Steelies with a chrome hub cap and painted stardust silver would look fine I think.

They cost me £50 each nearly 5 years ago. Less than half of a second hand alloy?

My alloys sit in the garage all winter protected from salt and damage and tyres last a lot longer.

I considered wheel trims but they seem expensive for what they are, easily damaged and could well be lost if not secured with ugly zip ties.

I have steelies bought from a member advertised on this forum, they weigh a hell of a lot less than the alloys they replace.

They came with genuine Skoda wheeltrims which look very smart and which dont get covered in brake dust like the alloys, I recently found a really nice looking set of black wheel trims for next to nothing in Noz (a shop that sells bankrupt stock, end of lines, overproduction etc) they retainers wont be as good as the Skoda ones but I hope to avoid the tywraps.

If you want to feel a really heavy wheel try one of the spacesavers rated for the larger vehicles, the one I use on the Yeti weighs double that of the alloys, the rim is 5 or 6mm steel and the tyre must be thicker than one on a forklift, in fact it feels like a solid rubber tyre.
