Winter Wheels

Featured Replies

I was looking at the Skoda accessories brochure, which is here https://www.skoda.co.uk/_doc/08dde6bc-3689-47b7-a965-d3d059ee90c7

On Page 5&6 it has the alloy wheel collection and next to Orion & Triton it has a snow logo, indicating winter alloys, but surely if people wanted a cheap set brand new OEM you'd go for Stratos as it's £191 per wheel compared to £199 for Orion and £215 for Triton ?

I know for winter tyres you want as narrow tyres as possible, so 215 is ideal (not sure why people put fat tyres on as thats the worst possible thing to do!), but what I can't remember is, do you need the spokes to be as big as possible (Orion & Triton) so snow doesn't form inside the wheel, or is it the other way round? can't remember 😞

If you are in deep snow, wet snow, blizzard type condition the snow can compact in any kind of wheels / spoke type.

As to Narrow Tyres, then yes maybe studded / snow tyres and getting through to get grip then narrow works.

If on Ploughed / Gritted / Salted roads even with snow lying on top the winter / All Weather / Snow tyre tread works with the snow.

Narrower need not be better and if you think 215 is better than 235 or 225 then by that thinking 195 might be even better,

The thing is that in the UK from November to April the All Weather / Winter tyres might get hours or days of doing the job on Snow / Ice but then have weeks of just dealing with not so cold, not so wet or not so snowy.
